Every year the production of waste on Earth increases.Today, about 2 billion tonnes of solid waste are produced each year. However, according to experts' predictions, in 30 years we can expect that production at the level of 3.4 billion tons per year. In 2019, a statistical Pole produced 332 kg of rubbish.This is 49 kg more than five years earlier and, if you believe in the predictions, above 30 years from now, a statistical Pole will produce 564 kg ...

Do we have a trash problem?

Fortunately, awareness of the destruction of the environment and littering of the planet is greater, so people have made efforts to reduce the amount of garbage produced.The ideal solution is giving “new life”to rubbish - this is what recycling does.

Recycling is needed and being eco is not difficult at all.We start with garbage segregation: we divide the garbage into categories and throw it into containers with the appropriate colors:

E – waste – a new type of waste

E-waste is a new type of waste.These include any used or damaged electronic equipment or… just thrown away due to being replaced with a newer, better model.They contain toxic substances like lead and mercury and non-renewable resourceslike gold, copper, platinum and cobalt. How can we recycle these valuable resources and neutralize toxic ones? It is very difficult and expensive process. That’s why rich, developed countries“solve” problem sending all e-waste to poor regions of world: Africa, Asia, where all villages including children take these wastes to pieces and sort all components.

We litter more and more, so there are dangerous occurences:Extinction of animal species.Contamination of soil and groundwater.But also even absurd phenomena, such as the emergence of a new island in the Pacific - the island made of garbages. It calls Great Pacific Garbage Patch.It was created by the action of constant sea currents, still feeds with new garbage, is still compacting and today it covers an area 4.5 times larger than the territory of Germany!

What can we do?Let's segregate waste. Let's throw rubbish into bins. Let us wear clothes to wear, not just to change fashions. We should choose products from ecological and sustainable crops.Let's choose public transport instead of a car, and a bicycle or a scooterin the season.

Japan is a phenomenon on a global scale. It is a leader in waste segregation – in the Global Waste Index, a ranking assessing the country's approach to waste management, Japan has a score of 92.48 out of a possible 100 points!And the best part is that you won't find… rubbish bins in their streets.In this country there is a rule: "gomi wo mochikaerimashou" - "take the rubbish with you".In some cities, waste is divided intoeven 45 categories. What do our 5 colors look like?Despite this, Poland is not that poor in the above ranking: it scored 84.74 points, while the USA only 65.29.
