Introduction to KPOP

K-pop ( abbreviation of Korean pop, French: Korean Pop, Korean: 케이팝, RR:keipap) is a term for several musical genres (dance-pop,pop ballad,electronic, etc.) originating from South Korea, characterized by a wide variety of audivisual elements and abbreviated to the term Kpop.

This musical current invented after the war (1990) to help the financial crisis that South Korea was going through, in 1992, following the transition to a democratic state, saw its popularization being launched thanks to the group Seo Taiji & Boys, whose fusion between several musical styles (mainly hip-hop and vocals) achieved great success, which revolutionized the music industry in South Korea. As a result, adding elements from foreign music becomes a common practice in the K-pop industry.

Starting from social networking services and YouTube video sharing platform, K-pop is expanding its audience and proliferating through these internet sharing services. In the mid-2000s, the K-pop music market doubled its sales. In the first half of 2012, it earned a total of $3.4 billion, and was recognized by Time magazine as "South Korea's most profitable export".

Initially popular in East Asia during the late 1990s, K-pop opened up to the Japanese market at the turn of the 21st century thanks to SM Entertainment and star BoA. At the end of the 2000s, it moved from a musical genre to a subculture among adolescents and young adults in East and South Asia. Since then, K-pop has been present in other parts of the world, such as Latin America, Northeast India, North Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the immigrant population in the West.
