Content

Speaking is often spontaneous, open-ended, and evolving. Speech has its own skills, structures, and conventions different from written language.

What is speaking?

Speaking is the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non verbal symbols in the variety of contexts. (Chaney, 1998)

Speaking is the interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing, receiving, and processing information. (Brown, 1994, Burns and Joyce 1997)

Why is teaching speaking important? It helps students communicate with other people and express their opinions in a second language.

3. Supporting the qualities of the spoken language: We ask someone to repeat, or use different body language to communicate with one another.

Principles for teaching speaking 1. Creating realistic situations Teacher should think of a situation where the type of language he wants to introduce is commonly used. 2. Engaging all students When teaching speaking, teacher should see the classroom as a community. The students should communicate with each other, and not only with the teacher.

Principles for teaching speaking: 4. Personalizing speaking topics It will be easier for students to speak in a foreign language about topics they are interested in.
