Past perfect

What is the past perfect ?

The past perfect is used to refer to things that had happened in the past before something else happened. It is formed as in Spanish: with the past tense of the verb haber in its auxiliary function (had), plus the past participle of the main verb.

How to use Past Perfect

  • We can use the past perfect to show the order of two past events. The past perfect shows the earlier action and the past simple shows the later action.

Some Examples

  • I had written articles on various topics before he came.
  • He had read different kinds of books before you came.
  • They had played football in that field before it started to rain.
  • She had gone to the coffee shop before she came home.
  • He had studied in the library before he came to the class.
