CSP Reflection Assignment
As they talked about Make a Wish in my school, I was very interested to be a part of this. They were looking for possible volunteers and I decided to join this due to the fact that I love helping others and this allowed me to do this to a great extent. With this, I would be able to help children with terminal diseases to fulfill one wish they had. I thought this would be such a gratifying activity.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organisation based in the United States that grants the wishes of children aged 12 to 18 who are suffering from a life-threatening illness. Make-A-Wish was started in Phoenix and is based there. Make-A-Wish grants life-changing wishes to children suffering from life-threatening illnesses. Because a wish is an important part of a child's treatment journey, we strive to grant every qualified child's wish.
As we talked to Maria Camila, the kid who we were helping, we envisioned fulfilling her wish in such a way that she would be able to play the song she chose on the piano, or at least a part of it. She had a brain tumor and for this reason, we understood we had to organize the sessions in such a way that it would not be too tiring for her. As we did this, she was able to learn a part of the song she chose. The image on the right shows an infographic we had to make to explain how we would carry out her wish. We showed this to the coordinators of Make a Wish and they approved it, which initialized the completion of her wish.
Attributes I developed
- Empathy - Kindness - Communication
The most important challenge we faced as the group who helped Maria Camila, was that meeting with her was quite difficult. For one, she had many doctors appointments and later on, she spent some time in the hospital which meant that the fulfillment of her wish was postponed. Essentially, we had to wait for her to get better and keep sending her positive energy. When she got better, we continued with the sessions and were able to practice the song she chose. This can be adapted to future occasions as we waited for her to get better while thoroughly planning the sessions we would do next.
I would definitely recommend this project to others. It was such a joyful experience to be able to accomplish her wish and see the happiness in her. Furthermore, it was very gratifying to have her mother thank her as with this, we realized such a thing people might find a small action was actually something that made her very happy.
The image in the left shows the piano that we gave her. This was a piano that the school gave to us and we gave it to her in order for her to keep practicing as much as she wanted, this accounted for a major part of her wish.
This project has such a positive impact on myself as it made me realize how our actions can have such a positive effect on others. It is very gratifying to see that the time we put into fulfilling her wish was something that didn't take away anything from us but gave so much to her and her family.
The image included shows us as we taught her the song she choose. We asked a person from our school to help us with this as we did not know much about music to teach her.
