Let's Change the World

The precariousness of the Maa language peoples in the Rift Valley of Kenya

The Rift Valley is the Kenyan part of a long fault that formed 8 million years ago and extends from the Red Sea to Mozambique. Long considered the cradle of humanity, this area is now inhabited by the Nilotic people, indigenous peoples from the upper Nile Valley. It includes many ethnic groups, in particular the Maasai, Samburu and Ilchamus peoples. Despite Kenya's $87.9 billion GDP in 2018, these people are among the poorest, with an annual income below the national average of 300 euros. Societal changes have forced many of these semi-nomadic pastoralist tribes to settle down and gradually convert to agriculture. Access to water is still uncertain. It depends on rain, wells, ponds and tankers often far from the homes. The majority of the indigenous people live in traditional villages with mud huts. They live in basic and sometimes precarious conditions. Access to health and education is still difficult in this part of the country, with some people having to travel miles to reach infrastructure. Since the pandemic, poverty has only increased and the status of women has greatly regressed.

School dropout linked to the health crisis With the health crisis, many children were forced to leave school to work with their families. Thousands of girls between the ages of 12 and 18 were forced into prostitution and became pregnant, putting them out of school forever.

Female genital mutilations The entry into adulthood is marked by a circumcision ceremony for boys who become Moran warriors, and a female circumcision ceremony for girls in order to marry them off. The pandemic has resulted in a 30% increase in these cases since the return to the villages. In March 2021, Kenya's High Court upheld the ban on female genital mutilation, already deemed illegal since 2011.

Kenya, one of the most corrupt nations in the world Like many civil servants, police officers who are often underpaid use every possible pretext to extract money from the population, tourists and humanitarian missions coming to help their country. For the ruling circles, this means 6 billion dollars taken from the state budget.

"Anarchism is the highest degree of freedom and order that humanity can achieve", Pierre-Joseph Proudhon Anarchism is a movement of ideas and actions founded in the 19th century which aims to develop a society free of all forms of authority and intellectual, economic, physical and political domination; where the main values would be sharing, mutual aid and social justice. It would be a self-managing and libertarian society. "Today, norms and social rules are felt to be imposed because we live in a hierarchical society where we have not decided anything and have not participated in anything", according to the Anarchist Organisation. The anarchist ideology may have been misunderstood by a part of the population that considers it to mean absence of rules and chaos. According to this ideology, in order for freedom to exist, one must learn to organise oneself in society with a common goal. Norms and rules would therefore be essential for a sustainable organisation. But these rules should be established by and for all individuals, getting rid of all exploitations, oppressions and alienations coming from the current hierarchical organisation. According to the Anarchist Organisation, "The refusal to participate in the electoral masquerade is not a passive act, [...] but a refusal to maintain the illusion".

On April 19, 2020, one of the largest fires in modern Polish history occurred. What is worse, it took place in the largest Polish National Park - Biebrza National Park. It took 7 days to extinguish the fire, during which 5,500 thousand hectares were burnt. The fire was extinguished by a total of 1,540 people and took 11,300 hours. The employees of the Park played an important role in extinguishing the fire, as they acted as guides in the difficult terrain for other services, and actively extinguished the fire themselves every day during the day and night. "We felt like our home was on fire," said the employees. "Swamps burned - areas that should have been wet." According to the workers, the scale of the fire was caused by the progressing climate crisis - they had been observing drought and low water levels in the swamps for several years. In Duty tells their story about their work and the fire.

Back

Once upon a time in the forest of Kullu, there was a young girl named Janisha Marchal. This girl was happy whenever she played in the forest. The trees spoke to her, she was completely in tune with the ecosystem. However, the presence of fires began killing the trees and unchecked human greed ravaged the land. The trees communicate their message to Janisha as a warning for all of humankind: humans cannot keep burning the forests and cutting down the trees or else there will be irreparable consequences for people. This green paradise situated in the Himalayas is in grave danger due to the savage climate change caused by the neglect of men. This may be desribed like a fairy tale, but it is actually a documentary, and the fate of the Kullu forest is a very real concern. The term “Buddhi” is a feminine vedict Sanskrit which is used to describe the force behind wisdom and awakening, thus giving the documentary’s title “TO WAKE”. Janisha, despite being five years of age, is wiser and far more in tune with nature than people may realize. Janisha and the women of the community she lives in have dedicated their lives to preserve the Kullu forest. They are environmentally aware on both a physical and spiritual level. Her people even go so far as to design an oven which burns fewer wood and emits less smoke emissions. Janisha wishes to impart and extend her wisdom to the people of her village, thus empowering them to save their ecosystem. However, Janisha has also seen the dark side of human ignorance: massive fires burning the magical forest she lives in, for no reason at all. The toll this takes on her reveals the almost symbiotic relationship between Janisha and the forest itself, as she is in tune with her surroundings on a deeply spiritual level. Janisha understands the forest, she feels its pain when burnt and decimated, and this is why she communicates her message and tries to spread the word before it is too late. Janisha represents the power of women as protectors of nature, women have always been more connected to the earth and Janisha is a clear example of a level of awareness that not many manage to achieve. Janisha is also highly empathetic with animals and other living beings, becoming a protector of life as a whole, for both flora and fauna and for all of humanity for it is all connected. Without the trees, there is no air, no water from the rains, no animals to keep the delicate equilibrium and finally there will be no more people on the face of the earth. Janisha was born with a nerve disorder known as “Erb’s Palsy” which has rendered her right arm immobile, this doesn’t stop her from becoming an ambassador, a teacher and a mentor for an entire generation of protectors and activists. Janisha is the heroine of an ongoing story; her battle as protector of the Kullu forest has just begun. Her name means “Go Darkness”, her destiny is to bring light to the world.

Back

This story is about the unheard voices of traditional marine fishers. On the doorstep of Isimangaliso Wetland Park – a nature lover's wonderland that attracts tourists from all over the world - are the homes of the poorest and most marginalized coastal communities who have a high dependency on natural resources for survival. In the heart of the most tranquil beaches, we follow brave village Women as they conquer the harshness of the waves just to provide for their families. We take a walk in their shoes as they share in on their past and present experiences of the ocean, the generational access to marine living resources, their indigenous knowledge on the practice of mussel harvesting and what they hope for in future, especially since they were once criminalized during apartheid times for wanting to provide food for their families.

This film will educate the public on an endangered species in their country that no one knows or is talking about. We will look at what makes an African Wild Dog so unique and give insight on how they are as a species with regards to their social dynamics and hunting techniques as a pack. Part of the Pack will take the form of a short conservation documentary on African Wild Dogs. It is one of Earth's oldest canines, with every dog having a unique coat differentiating the pack and giving them individuality. This film will show the organisations assisting and monitoring this species and we will interview conservationists at the oldest game reserve in south Africa, who dedicate their lives to make a difference. We will highlight the challenges and life threatening situations that African Wild Dogs have to face on a daily basis. As a pack they face the threat of snaring, poaching, sicknesses, natural enemies as well as negligent driving in reserves. This film will enlighten and encourage the public on how it can assist, what it can do to make a change, and how it can educate others to make a difference in the outcome the species is facing. This film will represent the needs of Wild Dogs, and be the voice they need in order for assistance and care. This film will bring light on the silent epidemic this species is facing and be the motivation to get the public involved to make a difference

Let's Change the World

Visual arts quickly made its way to the forefront of my life as a way of expressing myself and showcasing my perspective. As a queer 17 year old artist, I strive to capture authenticity and vulnerability in my work. Slowly over time I discovered the value that is found within connecting images to a greater narrative. What I hope to manifest for the future, is the opportunity to highlight the people, places and stories that have gone unrepresented, without an audience. These hopes and manifestations have taken over the importance of my life and have become the reason I wake up in the morning; to share stories.

The ‘Cheruvayal Raman’ Effect In his 2 acre land in Edavaka Panchayat of Wayanad, Cheruvayal Raman, a Kurichya farmer conserves 45 rice varieties. During 2016, 70 year old Raman was awarded the National Genome Savior Award instituted by Plant Varieties Protection and Farmers Rights Authority of India. Chervayal Raman realized the genetic erosion of rice in Wyanad long back and conserved maximum number of varieties in his farm. Varieties with duration of 3, 4, 5 and 6 months are cultivated in Raman’s farm. Raman has established a network of farmers through an informal seed distribution mechanism based on the traditional barter system. He gives rice seeds to anybody on a condition to return the same quantity in the next year. According to Raman, seeds cannot be sold because they are the manifestations of farmer’s love, care, and hard work. We should stand together, protect and cultivate these varieties in order to prevent their erosion and Bio-piracy. This exchange system helps to increase the cultivation of local rice varieties and strengthen the bond between farmers. Every year, Raman distributes about 150 kg seeds to 250 farmers across the country.
