AC Defibrillators
These were the early defibrillators, which used AC
Portable defibrillators for use in ambulances were introduced in the 1960s. Before the 1950s, only open heart AC defibrillators were used, using AC from a power socket, transformed from the 110–240 volts available in the line, up to between 300 and 1000 volts, to the exposed heart by way of "paddle" type electrodes. This did, however, sometimes cause injury to the heart. In the mid 1950's in the USSR, a closed chest defibrillator was created, which applied an alternating voltage of greater than 1000 volts, through electrodes applied through the chest cage to the heart.
Facts about AC Defibrillators
They have appropriate voltages for bothinternal and external defibrillation.
For external AC defibrillators, the duration of the shocks was typically between 100 and 150 milliseconds
AC defibrillators deliver a shock of 50 Hz a.c frequency to the chest for a time of 0.25 to 1 second through electrodes
AC Defibrillator Circuit
AC defibrillators consist of a step-up transformer with primary and secondary winding and two switches.
