Speaking Strategies

In small groups (2 / 3 students) think about a situation when you had to speak up (e.g. oral exam at high school, job interview, speech in front of a large audience, personal talk with someone you didn’t know well). Try to remember details about that moment.

  1. Were you nervous / relaxed?
  2. Did you run out of words?
  3. Did you use gestures to express your ideas? What were the gestures you made?
  4. Did you forget specific words (vocabulary) you needed to get yourself understood?
  5. Could you keep the pace (rhythm when speaking)of the conversation / speech?
  6. Did the other people pay attention to you?

Think about characteristics of oral communication and ways to communicate orally in a successful way.
