The nervous system

Understanding the body's Electrical wiring.

Nervous System

It is a complex network of nerves and cells that carry messages to and from the brain and the spinal cord to various part of the body

Neurons

They are the information processing units of the brain which have a responsibilty for sending, receiving, and transmitting electrochemical signals throughout the body.

NeuralCommunication

01

Detection and reception of stimuli by thye dendrites of the neuron.

An animal receives thousands of stimuli simultaneously.

02

Reception

Transmission of signals to and from a neuron to another neuron through the axon.

Transmission

03

Sorting ans interpretation of incoming sensory information and determing the appropriate response.

04

Integration

Action or response to the stimulus by muscles or glands.

Action

Neurotransmission across the Synapse

A nerve impulse is transmitted from one neuron to another through junction called synapse. The membrane of the pre-synaptic and post-synaptic neuron make a synapse. Conduction ends at the axon terminals and neurotransmission begins.

Antagonists Drug

Agonists Drug

  • These chemicals block or inhibit the normal activity of the neurotransmitter system.
  • Schizophrenia is associated with overactive dopamine neurotransmission. The antipsychotic drugs block the dopamine's effect by binding its receptors without activating them.
  • These are chemicals that mimic a neurotransmitter at the receptor site and thus, strengthen its effects.
  • Parkinson's Disease is associated with low levels of dopamine. Therefore, dopamine agonist can be used as a treatment strategy.
