SYNTHESIS REACTION

What is a synthesis reaction?

03

Is when two or more chemical species combine to form a more complex product.

GENERAL FORMULA: SYNTHESIS REACTION

A + B AB

Synthesis reactions

Group A metals combine with nonmetals to form ionic compounds. (To get the correct formula you must know the charges of the cations and anions that the metal and nonmetal form).

Synthesis reactions

When two nonmetals react in a synthesis reaction, there is more than one possible product. – you must be given the product name

Synthesis reactions

When a transition metal and a nonmetal react in a synthesis reaction, there may be more than one possible product because the transition metal could form more than one cation. – you must be given at least the charge on the cation.

Synthesis reactions

Nonmetal oxides (nonmetal with oxygen) react with water to produce an acid (H+ compound).

Synthesis reactions

Metallic oxides (metal with oxygen) react with water to give a base (OH- compounds). Use ionic charges to write formula of product.

Synthesis reactions

A metal oxide and nonmetal oxide combine to form a salt.

DECOMPOSITION REACTION

What is a DECOMPOSITION reaction?

03

A single compound is broken down into two or more products and usually require energy (heat, light or electricity) to take place.

GENERAL FORMULA: DECOMPOSITION REACTION

A B A + B

DECOMPOSITION reactions

When a binary (2 elements only) compound breaks down, the products will be those 2 elements.

DECOMPOSITION reactions

When some acids are heated, they decompose to form water and nonmetal oxide

DECOMPOSITION reactions

When some metal hydroxides (metal combined with OH-)are heated, they decompose to form a metallic oxide and water.

DECOMPOSITION reactions

When some metallic carbonates (metal combined with CO3 2-) are heated, they decompose to form a metallic oxide and carbon dioxide.

DECOMPOSITION reactions

When metallic chlorates (metal combined with ClO3-)are heated, they decompose to form metallic chlorides and oxygen.

COMBUSTION REACTION

What is a COMBUSTION reaction?

03

is a reaction in which a hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen gas, releasing energy in the form of light and heat.

REPLACEMENT REACTION

Types of replacement reactions:

03

Single replacement reaction

Double replacement reaction

What is a SINGLE REPLACEMENT reaction?

03

Is a reaction in which one element is substituted for another element in a compound.

GENERAL FORMULA: SINGLE REPLACEMENT REACTION

If we are trying to figure out whether a single displacement reaction will occur, there are two main questions we need to answer:

1. What are the two elements that might swap places in our proposed reaction?

In general, elements that form anions can replace the anion in a compound, and elements that form cations can replace the cation in a compound.

If we are trying to figure out whether a single displacement reaction will occur, there are two main questions we need to answer:

2. What is the new compound that will form as a product?

Once we know what element might be replaced in our ionic compound, we can predict the products that might be formed.

If element C, is more reactive than element A, then C, will replace A, in a compound. If element C, is less reactive than element A, then there will be no reaction.

What is a DOUBLE REPLACEMENT reaction?

03

Is a reaction that occurs when parts of two ionic compounds are exchanged, making two new compounds.
