Relative clauses give us information about the person or thing mentioned.

Juan pablo, who is Aura's brother, makes really bad jokes. (I am adding extra information about Juan Pablo). Ragnar was a Viking who tried to conquer England (Im providing you with essential information about Ragnar).

DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

It gives ESSENTIAL information to distinguish which thing or person we are talking about. It cannot be removed from the sentence -it wouldn't make sense!

Carlota is the girl who/that I saw last week.

notice how you can use who or that for PEOPLE

Carlota is the girl

without the defining clause, the sentence is incomplete.

RELATIVE PRONOUNS

WHO

It is used with PEOPLE: Raúl is the man who stole the money.

It is used with ANIMALS or OBJECTS: That is the dog which attacked me the other night / That is the bat which / that I want to buy.

WHICH

It is used to refer to PLACES: That is the house where Freddie Mercury used to live.

WHERE

WHEN

It is used to refer to TIME: That was the day when Jing passed her B1 exam.

With DEFINING relative clauses we can use: WHO / THAT with people. Pelé is the football player who / that has scored the most goals WHICH / THAT with objects or animals. That is the mug which / that I bought in Paris
