History is a social science that allows us to know the evolution of the main human processes, from the origins of the first communities to the present day.

What is history?

History studies the events related to humanity over time. It is based on the critical analysis of concrete and true testimonies.

To measure historical time we use large units of time: millennium (1.000 years), century (100 years), and decade (10 years).

We call source what allows us to reconstruct, understand and interpret events that occurred in the past. Written sources: they contain the information in a specific medium (paper, stone, papyrus, parchment, etc.) They can be made by hand (manuscripts) or by machine (prints). Material sources: archaeological remains (excavations, monuments, tombs, human remains, ceramics, textiles, etc.) Oral sources: oral traditions of the peoples who pass their history from generation to generation (legends, myths, stories, songs, etc.)

The Miguel Hernández University of Elche created the Pedro Ibarra Chair in 2009, with the aim of promoting research on our local history. Its objective is to contribute to a better understanding of the history of Elche. To do this, the elche.me website compiles biographies, texts, publications, photographs, sounds and images from our history.

How to preserve historical sources

Do you want to make history?

The Pedro Ibarra Chair in Elche helps us rescue our past and share it. With the help of an adult, send a photo or a biography and together we will make your family part of history. www.elche.me
