Question 1

After the Treaty of Paris 1898 was signed, it gave ownership of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Phillipine islands to the US, along with granting temporary control of Cuba to the US.

True

False

Room 3

The Treaty of Paris 1898 was signed to end the Spanish American War. It favored the US and gave us control of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the islands of Guam. Cuba was granted independence from Spain but it was now controlled by the US. With this treaty, the US was now advancing as an imperial power. Before the Spanish American War, the US was invested in Cuba with its businesses and trade. With Spain's oppression over Cuba, the US needed to take Cuba. With the US's rising imperialist motives, the Americans looked to expand outwards and spread their influence in new territories. However, since they had stayed in the Phillippines after helping them to fight for independence, a conflict rises...

Question 2

When the US helped the Phillipines gain independence from Spain, they left the country and let them be their own nation.

True

False

Room 3

After the Spanish American War, the US had increased more imperialist motives. The need to expand, the need to economize, the need to take land before another country/power takes it, which white men were superior to others. During the Spanish American War, the US together with the Filipinos led by Emilio Aguinaldo had fought Spain off of the Philippines. When the war was over, the Philippines gained independence from Spain...or so they thought. The US looked at the economical opportunities of Asia that the Philippines could bring. Concerned that the Philippines could not govern themselves, along with the threat that another world power would take over them before they do, the US decided to stay in the Philippines and replace Spain as another power governing them.

Question 3

The Filipino American War broke out due to Spain lying about the terms of the treaty and attacked the US.

True

False

Room 3

The Filipinos wanted independence from Spain, a power that was oppressing them. Once Spain had been defeated, they thought they had gained independence. However, the US decided to stay in the Philippines, replacing Spain as another power that would be governing them, cutting off their independence. Angered by the US, Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Filipinos, led a revolt against the US. This quickly turned into what is known as the Filipino American War. This war will bring more casualties and deaths than the Spanish American War. During the war, the US used Spain's reconcentration policy, amassing Filipinos into a couple of towns where thousands died of sickness and starvation. As the war wages on, more and more people die.

Question 4

The Filipino American War was a longer and bloodier battle than the Spanish American War. Soldiers died more to enemy weapons than diseases.

True

False

Room 3

The war was longer and bloodier than the Spanish American War. American soldiers died more from enemy weapons than diseases compared to the smaller Spanish American War. The Filipino American War would last 3 years with 4,200 American soldiers, over 20,000 Filipino soldiers, and as many as 200,000 Filipino citizens deaths. With Emilio Aguinaldo captured in 1901, the Philippines would surrender and be part of the US. Only 44 years later the Philippines would gain independence from the US. After WW2, the US would declare and recognize the Philippines as an independent nation, leaving them alone.

Question 5

After three years of bloodshed, the Filipino American War ended with Emilio Aguinaldo caputred by the US. The US would colonize the Philippines, bringing good and bad things.

True

False

Room 3

Following the US's new imperialistic motives, Theodore Roosevelt wanted to build a canal on the isthmus of Panama to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This massive project intended to promote trade with other nations and countries without traveling for as long. With all other world powers expanding into new territories, we were put under the pressure of being taken over by them. The pressure caused us to change, and we began taking over territories, becoming imperialistic. We started with the annexation of Hawaii, then the acquisition of Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines, and the Islands of Guam, and finally the construction of the Panama Canal. There were certainly good benefits and bad benefits of imperialism on the United States. However, without the influence of imperialism in the US, some of our culture, policies, and motives would have been different today.
