Today we'll focus on Zero and First Conditional

Zero Conditional- Why do we use it?

The Zero Conditional is used to talk about: -General truths -Scientific facts -Things that always happen under certain conditions

The Zero conditional is formed by the if-clause and the main clause. We always use the present simple with the Zero Conditional: If clause + Present simple, Main clause + Present simple If my team loses, I'm disappointed We can also invert the order: Main clause + Present simple If clause + Present simple I'm disappointed if my team loses

REMEMBER THAT..

We can usually replace ''if'' with ''when''in zero conditional sentences! Example: If / When you go swimming, you get wet. If / When there is no oxygen, living things die.

First conditional: when do we use it?

We use the first conditional when we talk about future situations that may be: -Real -Possible

• When I finish work, I'll call you.
• If you don't apologize, you'll regret it later.

• If it doesn't rain tomorrow, we'll go to the beach.
• Arsenal will be top of the league if they win.

How do we form the first conditional?

In first conditional sentences, the structure is usually: if/when + present simple + will + infinitive. If you don't drop the gun, I will shoot! If you don't leave, I will call the police. If I have time, I will finish that letter

Remember that...

It is also common to use the structure with unless, as long as, as soon as or in case instead of ''if''. I'll leave as soon as the babysitter arrives. I don't want to stay in London unless I get a well-paid job. I'll give you a key in case I'm not at home. You can go to the party, as long as you're back by midnight.
