bEHAVIOURAL APPROACH

BY MARIAMA

what is behavioural approach

the behavioual approach is looked over more within the concepts of physchology. that idetifyies how an indiviuals environment and how the external stimuli affect a person's mental states and development and how these factors specifically "train" a person for the behaviors they will be exhibiting later on.

behavioual approach is one of the 5 main approches health proffestionals use to commucate ad meet indiviuals needs effectively. It fouces on the idea that behaviors are learned through interaction with the environment.

how can this be applied with health and soical care

it is used wihtin a health and soical setting to change most commonly used with children or in situations where the Authority figure 'wants' to control the behaviour of a client . It uses positive and negative reinforcement to shape a person's behaviour. they demonstate i order to overcome barriers thats effecting the ablity of being able to meet their needs.

+info

what are the strenght and weakeness?

weakness

strenght

  • Not always easy to get people to change their mind
  • The client may rebel against being told what to do
  • Older people may resent being 'treated like a child'
  • It doesn't consider the client's thoughts or feelings
  • It may be seen as dogmatic and a punishment
  • Punishment is often used more frequently than rewards
  • Could be seen as de-humanising - reducing our behaviour to responses to a stimuli
  • It is easy to put into practice
  • It is simple to understand
  • The results are usually quick
  • It uses small steps to shape the behaviour
  • It doesn't require a specialist to implement it - anyone can use the approach
  • It is based on the principle that reinforced (rewarded) behaviour will be repeated
  • The results can be measured and demonstrate progress
  • It is suitable for any age and ability

JAMES

This can be interpeted within the situatiuon referring to james refusesal of havig support with his shower/.baths. As this was suggested by his OT at the hospital. Aswell as taking into concideration that james has a low iron difecinecy which increases the risk of maybe falling in the bath tube. this makes it essencial to change James behaviour toward this situation as it could result him in a irreversbile injuries.

where CAN THIS BE APPLIED WITHIN THE CASE STUDIES
