Biography of lavinia fontana

Lavinia Fontana (Bologna, born August 24, 1552-Rome, died August 11, 1614) was an Italian painter of the early Baroque. She was one of the most important painters of her time, she ran her own studio and was the official court painter of Pope Clement VIII.She was the daughter of the painter Prospero Fontana, a painter from the Bologna school, who taught her the trade. Fontana's style was, indeed, very close to the late Mannerism practiced by his father. Already at a very young age she made a name for herself as a painter of small cabinet works, mainly portraits. Lavinia Fontana married in 1577, at the age of 25, with Gian Paolo Zappi. He was also a painter in the workshop of Prospero Fontana and a member of a noble family. Lavinia had fourteen children with him. She continued to paint throughout her marriage to help the family while her husband took care of the house and assisted her as a helper.

Portrait of the daughter of Petrus Gonsalvus, known as the Wild Gentleman of Tenerife. Gonsalvus had a characteristic that fascinated half of Europe in the 16th century: he had hypertrichosis, an inherited genetic disorder that covered his entire body with hair. A full-fledged werewolf

Antonietta GonsalvusThe daughter of Beauty and the Beast.

History

In 1573 Don Pedro González married a beautiful lady named Catherine (it is said that the story of "Beauty and the Beast" was born from there) and from this marriage six children were born: three boys and three girls, some of whom inherited hypertrichosis, which would also affect several of their grandchildren. One of the daughters of that marriage was Antonietta, here portrayed with great tenderness and sympathy by the great Lavinia Fontana A child portrait in which Antonietta carries a letter explaining a little about the history of her family and implying that she and her family were little more than curiosities that the nobles of the time could collect like exotic animals.

characteristics

In the Renaissance period, most of the painters, in the paintings reflected luminosity in some areas of the paintings, but when the Baroque era arrived, all that changed, because in the paintings that luminosity of before was no longer reflected, now the paintings they are darker.

Opinion

I think that her art at that time should have been more recognized, since her paintings are precious. She had an innate talent for art and they shouldn't have taken away her merits to give them to someone else.
