The victories against the Muslims
The Moors were people from the Northeast Africa who were converted to Islamism. Most of the Muslims who occupied the Iberian Peninsula were moors. They were the last invaders of the Iberian Peninsula. They controlled the Iberian Peninsula for more than 500 years.
- They crossed the strait of Gibraltar and defeated the Visigothic Christians at the battle of Guadalete. Tarik was their leader.

•D. Afonso Henriques was the first Portuguese king and he had great victories against the Muslims. •In 1147 his armies regained the city of Santarém. In the same year, with the help of the Crusaders, they took Lisbon, the most important city of the territory that became Portugal.

The Crusaders were Christian warriors / knights from several European countries. They participated in big military expeditions, the Crusades, which were organized to fight against the Muslims.
The role played by the military religious orders

The military religious orders had a fundamental action to regain the territory especially below the Tagus River. They were composed by warrior monks and their main activity was to fight against the opponents of the catholic religion. As a reward for their military activity, they received very big domains (land, properties) nearly all over the country but more particularly in Alentejo.
Portugal: a country built by the knight Templars

The military orders that settled in Portugal were… the Order of Hospitallers (with their headquarters in Crato), the Order of Santiago (with their headquarters in Palmela), the Order of the Knights of Calatrava (with their headquarters in Avis), and the Order of the Knights Templar (with their headquarters in Tomar). This last one subsisted in Portugal with a different name, “Order of Christ” ( also with their headquarters in Tomar).

The Abrantes castle
Successive invasions by Alans (411), Visigoths (492) and Moors (716) further indicated the strategic importance of this site.
- During the Christian Reconquista (English: Re-conquest), the settlement in the area of Abrantes was taken from the Moors by forces in the service of Afonso Henriques (1112-1185), who restructured the defences of the site to attract settlers into the region. He granted the lands to the Order of Santiago (1172) so that they could watch over and assist pilgrims.

The detention block is located in the central plan of the Castle. This area was used as a military square during the 18th century.

Later, this castle was incorporated into the Linha do Tejo (English: Tagus Line) that the Knights Templar established to control and maintain the lands reconquered from the Muslims. The castle outpost, as well as the castles of Almourol, Castelo Branco, Monsanto, Pombal, Tomar, Torres Novas and Zêzere formed a defensive barrier of garrisons along the middle course of the Tagus River. It is on the right margin of this river. It is a characteristic hilltop fortification, located on a 197-metre high plateau.
