The Story So Far
Numberella has been having strange dreams where a group of people she doesn't recognise keep calling for help and saying they're starving. She tells Ronnie, and together they go to Jin Genie's house to see if they can use his crystal ball to find out what's happening. He's away, but they find the crystal ball anyway and use it. In the 'between space' created by the ball, they meet Massasoit, a native American who has been acting as Numberella's spirit guide. He tells them that they need to travel back in time to 1620, and bring supplies to the Mayflower pilgrims, who are struggling to survive the bitter winter. Numberella and Ronnie call in Harry Hijack to help them, and pay a visit to Probabilium's famous Wholesale Market in the Italian sector to get the supplies they need. With the supplies purchased, they drive with Harry to a secret location where they discover a time machine.
The Story So Far
Having landed in 1620, Numberella and Ronnie discover that Harry is a DETER agent with access to exciting 'Neuro Weapons' called TAGGs (a.k.a. Splurge Guns), Invincibility Cloaks, and the mysterious Rings Of Power. Harry kits out Numberella and Ronnie with the Invincibility Cloaks, but before he can show them the Rings Of Power a disturbance in the trees nearby forces them to start their journey into the forest without delay. After walking for a while, they discover a deserted wigwam and settle down for the night, only to find themselves surrounded by hostile Native Americans who then wrap them up in the wigwam and club them unconscious. Croatoan and his men carry Numberella and Ronnie to the settler's camp where they hope to trade them for food. However when Croatoan discovers that Numberella and Ronnie were wearing the clothes of the dead from the wigwam, he is very angry.
The Story So Far
He attempts to grab Numberella and Ronnie, but the settlers intervene. Miles Standish, a soldier, negotiates with Croatoan, and Numberella and Ronnie are traded for one pig, and one hogshead of beer. The settlers believe Numberella's story, and they prepare to retrieve the provisions from the forest. Meanwhile, Numberella and Ronnie begin to learn how to use the Rings Of Power - with some startling results. Having made their way into the forest, the settlers are attacked by Croatoan and his gang, who they manage to fight off. Numberella and Ronnie use their Rings Of Power to attempt a flanking attack on Croatoan and his gang, who are regrouping. And all is going well until Numberella steps on a branch which alerts them to their presence...

Mission 1 - splurge attack
As Numberella landed, a small branch broke under her weight. One of the natives at the back of the group must have heard it, as he turned sharply – but seeing nothing, he turned again to listen to Croatoan’s harangue. “On the count of three,” whispered Numberella, and they raised their splurge guns. “Do you mean fire on three? Or count three and then fire?” asked Ronnie. “Three then go,” said Numberella. “Always on go.” “One, two, three, go!” they whispered together, and fired their splurge guns. Jets of green shot out of them, coating the rearmost rank of the unsuspecting natives. “And fix,” whispered Ronnie as they fell, then firing again at the centre of the bewildered group.
“Croatoan’s escaping!” cried Numberella, sending hopeful blasts from her laser canon into the trees. In the distance, there was a roar from the pilgrims, who began to charge across the clearing towards the flashing lights. The panicking natives that had not been splurged, seeing the threat from the front, as well as the new threat from behind, scattered to the left and the right. Ronnie and Numberella pursued them, but flight at speed was almost impossible in the thickness of the forest, and before long they gave it up. “To me!” cried Standish, holding up his sword, which glinted in the moonlight. “We have seen them off,” he said exultantly, “but we cannot rest...

Mission 2 - let the scars lead the way
Numberella, Ronnie – ye fought well. But now, we must find the supplies. The fight will have alerted everyone in the area, and we can be sure they will move towards it at first light. Thou hast marked the trees with axes? We must find the first mark.” “I can see it!” cried Ronnie, pointing at a tree with a slash in the middle of the trunk. Losing no time, the group marched on into the forest, following the marks on the trees. Dawn was breaking now, lifting the pall of darkness from the branches of the pines with invisible fingers, so that it became easier and easier to follow the trail of axe scars through the trees. At length, they saw the clearing and there, on the far side, the stash of provisions.
“There they be!” cried Standish, and a roar of excitement greeted his words. “Steady now,” he said. “Remember what happened to the Israelite! Numberella, Ronnie, can you use your invisibility to scout round and check the coast is clear? Then we can pick up everything we can carry and start the journey back.” “Of course,” said Numberella and Ronnie together. Having activated their cloaks, they moved noiselessly across the clearing and into the trees beyond. All was quiet. They deactivated their cloaks, and beckoned the settlers over towards the stash. “Swine, grain, axes, beans – all still here,” said Ronnie, triumphantly. “Should see thee through the winter!”

Mission 3 - loading up and time for rejoicing
“And don’t forget the wine!” said Numberella, pointing at the small pile of bottles which had miraculously survived the unloading process. “I shall carry the wine! I shall carry the wine!” cried Stephen Hopkins, looking at the dark glass bottles with wonder in his eyes. Meanwhile Standish had begun to investigate the larger sacks. “I was afeard there would be loose grain inside, but the grain be arranged into sacks, about a hundred weight a sack by my reckoning. Two sacks or a swine per man and we will be able to carry much of it back to the camp…and a Merry Christmas to us all.” “Merry Christmas to us all!” said the group, and patted one another on the back, shook hands, and said, “Great is the Lord!” and “The Lord be with us!”
Once they had all picked up as much as they could carry, they began the slow march back to the beach. Though the day was bitterly cold and grey, threatening snow, it held off, and it was a happy band which followed the axe mark trail back through the woods, sometimes singing softly to themselves, sometimes resting tired arms and backs, but driven onwards by the excitement of the safely found provisions and the promise of a better winter. As they passed the first clearing where they had battled only a few hours before, they found the body of Degory Priest, the bloody tomahawk lying at his side. “We will give him a Christian burial when we return for the rest of the goods,” said Standish. “We cannot tarry now, nor would poor Degory want us to.”

Mission 4 - safe return
“And what of them?” asked William Brewster, gesturing towards the native prisoners, still encased in the splurge jackets. “Pile them together,” said Standish. “For we cannot carry them, and we cannot free them now, ‘twould be too risky with our hands full. If Croatoan wants to come back for them, he can. We will not slay them – twould not be Christian on Christmas day.” There was a murmur of agreement and having piled up the prisoners under the cover of a tree, the group moved faster down the deer path, all eager to carry the precious stores back to the ship, where they would be safe. All were aware that such a windfall of food would be fought over by anybody who knew of it – and that only the hold of the Mayflower would offer a guarantee of its safety.
At last the cover of the trees gave way to the open land before the sea, and before long lookouts on the ship could be seen waving excitedly. A boat was launched, the seaman pulling lustily for the shore, and the tired group dropped their burdens onto the sand with great relief, sinking to their knees and thanking God for their safe arrival. “And now to feast!” cried Standish. “A roast pig on a spit shall be ours for Christmas lunch…” “Washed down with red wine,” cried Stephen Hopkins, and there was a tired shout of approval from most of the group, although Numberella noticed that some of them looked a bit pinched and disapproving.
