Skills: Anayze and Explain
Objective:
Identify suspense narrative characteristics by doing a reading.
Narrative Suspense
Suspense is a literary device that authors use to keep their readers’ interest alive throughout the work. The purpose of using this type of anxiety in literature is to make readers more concerned about the characters, and to form sympathetic association with them.
Suspense ensures the reader will have enough interest to continue reading throughout the piece.
Suspense Characteristics
If the author has done his job, suspense will continue to increase up until the climax, or the final confrontation and turning point.
Suspense uses that anxiety to make readers concerned about characters with whom they have formed sympathetic attachments.
In a suspense narrative, on the other hand, the protagonist gradually becomes aware of the peril and dangers, which readers already know. Secondly, in a mystery, a major event such as a murder or robbery happens at first and then the protagonist solves it.
Difference Between Suspense and Mystery
5 Elements of a Suspense Novel
1. Conflict
Every novel needs conflict, and it’s also incredibly important for building suspense. Whether the story is about trying to solve a murder or a protagonist trying to save the human population from extinction, this conflict will be the center of what makes a reader eager to find out what happens.
2. Pacing
The pace a novel is another important component to building suspense. If the plot is unfolding too slowly or taking too much time on small details that don’t enhance the conflict, readers will stop feeling the need to keep turning the page—thus lowering the feeling of suspense in a story.
3. Red herrings
Red herrings are clues in a story that mislead readers. These are extremely important in suspense because they send the readers down incorrect paths and keep them from solving the mystery before the end.
4. Atmosphere
The mood and tone of the novel are things that will affect how readers feel when they read a book. Where the story is set and the atmosphere it brings to the overall plotline will help build suspense in a novel..
5. High stakes
Similar to conflict and time, the authors need theirstory to have high stakes if they want it to be suspenseful.
