MODAL VERBS

Modal verbs are followed by an infinitive

START >

MUST / MUSTN'T (deber)

USES: 1. Internal obligation. Eg1: I must study more to pass my exams. 2. Direct order. Eg2: You must study more! 3 Prohibition (in the negative). Eg3: Clients mustn't (must not) swim in the pool without a swimmimng cap.

NEED TO (necesitar)

HAVE TO (tener que)

DON'T-DOESN'T HAVE TO / DON'T-DOESN'T NEED TO

USES:1) Necessity (sometimes exchangeable with have to) Eg6: Children need to wear a uniform at that school. Eg7: He needs to work on Sunday.

USES:1) External obligation (norms, laws...). Eg4: Children have to wear a uniform at that school. Eg5: He has to work on Sunday.

USES:1) Absence of obligation or necessity: Eg8: Children don't have/need to wear a uniform at that school. Eg9: He doesn't have/need to work on Sunday.

CAN (PODER)

USES: 1. Ability in the present (in +, -, ?): Eg1: He can lift 100 kilograms. 2. Informal permission (in ?) Eg2: Can I go to the toilet, please? 3 Prohibition (in -). Eg3: Children can't (cannot) drink alcohol.

COULD (podía / podría)

USES: 1. Ability in the past (in +, -, ?): Eg4: They couldn't dance very well. 2. Formal permission (in ?) Eg5: Could you tell me the way to the bank, please? 3 Possibility (in + or -). Eg6: The road could be blocked.

BE ABLE TO (ser capaz de)

USES: 1. Ability in the present or past (exchangeable by can/could): Eg7: I am able to speak Chinese. Eg8: He wasn't able to cook well. Eg9: Are you able to play the guitar?

SIEMPRE HAY QUE CONJUGAR EL VERBO TO BE EN PRESENTE O PASADO.

SHOULD (debería)

USES: 1. Give advice (dar consejos) in +, - or ?: Eg1: You should take an umbrella today. Eg2: You shouldn't eat so many pizzas. Eg: Should I go to the concert?
