She was an American activist in favor of the abolition of slavery of African-Americans , then anti-racist and feminist activist !

Harriet Tubman

Her Story :

  • She born between 1820-25.
  • She died on March 10, 1913.
  • She was a slaves, helped many slaves to escape.
  • She was called Grandmother Moses.
  • She participated in the Civil War.
  • After the abolition of slavery, she fight for the women's suffrage.

Maryland

Family origins :

  • Tubman's grandmother, arrived in the United States on a slave ship from Africa.
  • His mother was a cook for the Brodess family.
  • His father supervised the woodworking on the plantation.
  • The slavery system separated families, she was distancing of her parents and sisters.

Her youth :

  • At the age of five or six, she was leased to "Miss Susan".
  • She suffered a lot of violence and segregation because of her skin color.
  • She had been epileptic seizures.
  • When she was a young adult, she took the first name Harriet, probably in honor of her mother.
  • Around 1844 she married John Tubman, a free man.

Her escape :

  • In 1849, she was sick and her master tries to sell it.
  • Scarredto being sold, she escapes a first time September 1849 with her brothers.
  • Soon after, she escaped again, ths time without her two brothers.
  • Her was assisted by the Underground Railoard.

Abolitionist activities

  • Immediately after reaching the city of Philadelphia, she found odd jobs and started saving money.
  • In December, Tubman received news alerting her to the sale of her niece.
  • She voluntarily returned to the land of her enslavement.
  • In the fall of 1851, Tubman returned to Dorchestershire, this time to reunite with her husband John.
  • She later managed to bring her four brothers back to safety, but failed to rescue her sister.
  • In all, she personally guided approximately seventy slaves to freedom. She also gave instructions to many others.

Civil War :

  • She became an important figure in her camp.
  • She served as a cook and nurse, preparing remedies and helping soldiers who suffered from dysentery.
  • After the war, Harriet Tubman became an activist for African American and women's rights.
  • A book of hers published in 18690.
  • She died there in 1913 of pneumonia.

The most famous are :

  • Harriet Tubman Day : March 10, 1990.
  • An asteroid discovered in 2010 is named Tubman.
  • She is enshrined in the National Women's Hall of Fame.
  • A memorial is built in Maryland, the "Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument.
