what is an article?

  • is a piece of writing usually intended for publication in a newspaper, magazine or journal
  • is written for a wide audience, so it is essential to attract and retain the readers’ attention
  • may include amusing stories, reported speech and descriptions
  • can be formal or informal, depending on the target audience

News is factual. Something that is factual can be proved or disproved. For example, “Last Saturday was a rainy day,”

The Goals of a News Article

Most journalists (the people who write news articles) try to follow certain guidelines in their work. These principles of journalism help make sure that when people open a newspaper, they can believe what they read.

News articles are objective. They do not reflect the personal opinions of the journalist. Quotes and opinions of witnesses and observers to events may be included in an article, but they must be cited.

A news article tells the truth: the journalist writes facts that are, to the best of his/her knowledge, true. A careful journalist only states things that he/she can prove to be true, and will ‘cite’ the source of any uncertain information.example: “According to Mrs. Brown, principal of North Oaks High School, most high school freshmen take Spanish as a second language.”

News articles relate information that affects or is of interest to the public.

The purpose of a news article is to report the facts of a current event or problem. Although many people enjoy reading the news, the purpose of a news article is not entertainment.

Writing a news article is different from writing other articles or informative pieces because news articles present information in a specific way.

Once you can clearly answer the “5 W’s”, jot down a list of all the pertinent facts and information that needs to be included in the article.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Create an article outline. Your outline, and subsequently your article, should be structured like an inverted triangle. The inverted triangle allows you to build your story so that the most important information is at the top. Know your audience. News stories are written in the traditional form--the inverted pyramid form (the order of decreasing importance). The "inverted" or upside-down "pyramid" can be thought of as a simple triangle with one side drawn horizontally at the top and the body pointing down.

Paragraph 3: Include more background details on what happened before the event in order to give your Paragraph 4: An interview or quotes giving someone’s opinion on the event; this could be someone directly related to the story or some sort of respected or expert opinion.Paragraph 5: Look to the future; what is the impact of this event? What are you predictions for what might happen next?

There are hundreds of stories all around you. Every person, every school, every community has a story to tell. Just keep Who, What, Where, When and Why in mind as you start off with a great lead, tell the story – maybe throwing in a quote or two – and finish off with an eye-catching headline. To make a REALLY great story, use a photo or a graphic. To start you thinking, here are some of the stories recently turned in by students for their newspaper:
