Rethinking teaching, learning and assessment:

AssignmenT guidance

About the Module:

The module will challenge you to critically explore a range of teaching ideas and strategies to inform your teaching practice. By understanding key theories, concepts and ideologies linked to teaching, learning and assessment, you will develop approaches for learning that will challenge and stimulate children.

The Team:

Dani Shalet - Group 1 Jayne Leggot - Group 2 Simeon Corfield - Group 3 Sonia Tomlinson - Group 4 Lee Hazeldine - Group 5 Anthony Clarke - Group 6

The PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT:

The portfolio comprises 3 parts: A microteach. A Critical Reflection (assessed). A Critical Comparison (assessed).

The Microteach

In groups, plan a 30 minute microteaching session on a topic of your choice and construct a lesson plan (not - assessed this will form an appendix to refer to in your critical reflection). Deliver your planned lesson to the rest of the students within your RTLA group (not assessed).

A Critical Reflection (1000 words)

You will provide a critical reflection on your microteach that describes the teaching and learning activities conducted during the session and analyses their perceived benefits and limitations for learning. Your critical reflection will refer to a lesson plan produced for the planning of the session – this will be placed within an appendix but will NOT be assessed.

A Critical Comparison (3000 words)

You will produce a critical comparison of how the content of your microteach might be taught using two different approaches that you have learned about on the course. This should compare and contrast how the content may be taught / learned in a primary school setting using those two approaches.

A Critical Comparison (3000 words)

Your comparison should critically evaluate the benefits and limitations of the two approaches to each other, as well as the approach within your original microteach. Your critical comparison must be supported by relevant literature related to the teaching and learning theories you have examined during the course.

Whatever approaches you compare, think about their relationship to the following:

  • The individual
  • Knowledge
  • Society
Think about how this might affect the way in which you see:
  • the purpose of education
  • the role of the teacher
  • the expectations of the learner
  • the means of assessment

WHAT YOU WILL SUBMIT

  • A critical reflection (1000 words)
  • A critical comparison of two approaches (3000 words)
  • References / bibliography for your assignment
  • A lesson plan for the micro teach session (attached as an appendix).

LEARNING OUTCOMES
