to say that something is possible, but not certain (algo es posible pero no seguro)
Could, May, Might
Subject + modal verb + verb (base form) + C
They may come by car.

Use
Can
to make general statements (declaraciones) about what is possible:
It can be very cold here in winter.
(it is sometimes very cold in the winter)
You can get lost in this town.
(People often get lost in this town)

Be careful!
Do not use can to talk about specific events:
A: Where's John? B: I'm not sure. He may/might/could be (NOT can) in his office.
That dog can be dangerous. (= Sometimes that dog is dangerous. I know.)
That dog may/might/could be dangerous. (= I don't know.)
Modals of certainty (certeza)
Use
Must
to show we are sure something is true and we have reasons for our belief
Kevin must know about animals, he is a vet.
to suggest something is true and you have reasons for your suggestion
Should
It's nearly six o'clock. They should arrive soon.

to talk about someone's skill or general abilities

to ask permission to do something. (informal)

Could May
to ask permission to do something. (formal and polite)
