What was the Civil Rights Movement ?

Introduction

The end of the American Civil War in 1865 meant the end of slavery, but african Americans were in for a long struggle before they were finally awarded equal rights.

* An old newspaper from The New-York Times, about the Abolition of Slavery

* 13th Amendment abolishing slavery is certified by the Secretary of State

Jim Crow Laws

- Jim Crow laws were a collection of state and local statutes that legalized racial segregation. - Named after a Black minstrel show character - existed for about 100 years - meant to marginalize African Americans

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

- Created by Prominent White and Black companions in 1909 - the goal was to increase racial equality - worked for the abolition of segregation and discrimination

Ku Klux Klan

- Also known as the KKK- hate organization - White surpremisit group

-Was a sportsman- Won 4 gold medals at the 1930 Olympics in Berlin, Germany -faced many hardships to get to where he was ( due to segregation and racism )

Brown v. the Board of Education

- This Class action suit filed in 1951, asked that segregation in schools be struck down. - It was taken to the surpreme court - The case resulted in the first intergrated school in the United States - it opened in fall 1955

Rosa Parks

- She was an American activist in the Civil Rights Movement- shes best known for her role in the Monotgomery bus boycott ( She refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man ) - She is also called the mother of the Civil Rights Movement

Newton and Bobby Seale - It was a revolutionary organization with an ideology of Black nationalism, socialism, and armed self-defense, particularly against police brutality - goal was to protect residents from acts of police brutality - followed the principles set forth by Malcolm X
