Dolphins
Write a subtitle
What do Dolphins eat?Dolphins eat fish, squid and jellyfish. Bottlenose dolphins hunt by swimming close to the seabed to drive the fish to the surface. They then catch them in their mouths as they jump up!
Where do dolphins live? Dolphins live in seas and rivers. They can be found all over the world and live together in groups called pods. There are lots of different types of dolphin.
Adaptation:They have a flipper on both sides of their body and a fin on their back. They breathe through a single nostril on the top of their head called a blowhole.
Dolphins have a layer of fat under their skin to keep them warm.
SHARK
Where do they live? Sharks can be found in all of the Earth’s five oceans. Most prefer warmer temperatures though polar sharks prefer colder water.
Sharks
What do they eat? Most sharks are carnivores because they like to eat fish and other sharks. Some larger sharks eat dolphins, sea lions and small whales. Smaller sharks eat smaller prey such as clams, crabs and squid.
Adaptation:Sharks have all the senses that humans have; smell, sight, touch, taste and hearing. The strongest is their sense of smell. Sharks can smell a single drop of blood in the water from 400 metres away. They can also hear fish move. Sharks have very good eyesight and they can even see well in dim light, allowing them to hunt deeper in the ocean.
Jellyfish
They have been on earth for millions of years, even before the dinosaurs!
Jellyfish
Where Do Jellyfish Live? Jellyfish are found in salt water all over the world. They can survive in warm and cold waters. They mainly live in shallow waters near the coast although some have been found deep in the ocean.
What Do Jellyfish Eat? Jellyfish eat fish, fish eggs, shrimp, crabs and tiny plants. They use their tentacles to sting and capture their prey before eating it.
Jellyfish
Adaptation:Jellyfish have a smooth dome-shaped body and long, stinging tentacles. Their mouth is found in the centre of their body. Jellyfish have no brain, heart, bones or eyes. They are see-through because they are mostly made up of water.
SEAHORSE
Their scientific name is Hippocampus, which means ‘horse caterpillar’.
Adaptation:Seahorses get their name because they look a bit like horses. They have long, thin snouts, which help them find food in small areas. Their bodies are covered in spiny plates. Seahorses have curled tails, which they use to grip sea plants to help them stay still.
They can camouflage themselves, which means they can change their colour to suit their surroundings and hide from other creatures.
Where Do Seahorses Live? Seahorses can be found in seas and oceans all over the world, as long as the water isn’t too deep or too cold.
SEAHORSE
What Do Seahorses Eat? Seahorses eat tiny sea creatures, such as shrimp and plankton. Seahorses can eat up to 50 times a day!
