Definition

A conditional sentence is a type of subordinate clause that has two parts: if-clause (condition) + main clause (result): If it rains, I will stay at home (If-clause) (Main-clause) Condition Result

zero conditional

We use the zero conditional when we talk about: - facts which are generally true - A condition which has always the same result. Example: If you heat water to 100ºC, it boils. You care for the envionment when you recycle.

StructureCondition: if /when /unless + Present Simple Result: Present Simple Ex: If you heat ice, it turns to water. I feel bad when someone makes fun of others. I'm always ready to go out unless I feel very tired.

We use the first conditional to talk about: - things that probably will happen in the future given a specific condition. Ex: If you do your homework, you will go out . You won't pass the exam if you don't study.

FIRST conditional

Examples:

• We will get to the concert on time if we take a taxi.
• You won't go out unless you finish your homework.

• If you want to save energy, turn off the lights.
• If your documents are in order you can leave at once.

time cLAUSES

We use time clauses for future events and general statements. In time clauses, we use words such as when, as soon as, before, after, once, providing (that), on condition that, as long as, etc.

• You can take my car as long as you come back before diner.
• I'll let you go on condition that you tidy your room.
• Once I think about it , I'll make a decision .

SECOND conditional

We use the second conditional to talk about hypothetical or imaginary situations. It is also used to give advice. Example: If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world If I were you, I'd go to the doctor..

• She wouldn't be happy if she didn't have a pet.
• If I were an animal, I 'd be a dolphin.
• If I were you, I'd call your sister.
• Would you buy a yatch if you had enough money?

third conditional

We use the third conditional when it is impossible that the condition will be fulfilled because the action in the if-clause didn’t happen in the past. Example: If I had gone to the meeting, I would have met George Clooney. .
