While in Italy small states were created after the defeat of Napoleon in 1814 and the reunification of the Kingdom of Italy was only established in 1861, England was ruled by Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and this period is called the Victorian era. Britain was going through the Industrial Revolution and new inventions were made, including new machines for factories to accelerate production, for example in the textile industry. The steam train and the iron steam ship were invented to ease transport of goods and cities started to become crowded. In addition people began traveling to America and India.

The Industrial Revolution The new machines were created thanks to the growing steel industry, which meant that several products were made at the same time and thus the process known as mass production started. Britain governed many countries all over the world and many of these places are part of the British Commonwealth today.

The telegraph was invented by Guglielmo Marconi in 1895 and the telephone was also invented in this period, in addition people started using electricity for the first time. The first electricaly-lit streetlights, buildings and villages were in the UK. The Victorians believed in a class system where upper classes did not have to work, working classes were badly paid and the middle class was growing thanks to the Industrial Revolution. The British Empire had a positive impact on the British economy and a middle class of mer chants, bankers and professionals was coming into existence.

As a result, the population was increasing and new cities were established. By the end of the 19th century living conditions in the cities had improved by means of public parks, libraries and swimming baths. The first public library opened in Manchester in 1850 and people could borrow books for free, A while spa town such as Bath became very pop D N ular.
