Ground Reaction Force
Lameness Diagnosis
What is Ground Reaction Force
Force generating by hoof contact with ground
Split into three components (X,Y,Z)
Lameness results in a decrease in GRF trace
How to measure GRF
(Witte et al 2004)
Duty Factor
(Chateau et al. 2009)
Horseshoes
([online], Aphis.usda.gov. 2022)
Force Plates
CONCLUSIONS
Horseshoe shows most potential as a measuring tool.Force plates, most common but have limitations that need to be accounted for.
Need for a standardised scale.Previous literature was successful but can't use method in everyday clinical studies
Take home message: No, GRF can't be used as a diagnostic tool for lameness. The most promising application is evaluation of lameness treatment e.g using inverse dynamics.
