  • Reported speech is when we tell someone what another person said.
  • To do this, we can use direct speech or indirect speech.

2: Explain

Other Examples

Backshift

Direct speech: 'I work in a bank,' said Daniel. Indirect speech: Daniel said that he worked in a bank. In indirect speech, we often use a tense which is 'further back' in the past (work - worked).

No backshift

  • She said, “The Earth moves around the sun.”
  • She said (that) the Earth moves around the sun.
(Factual statements - No change in tense since it is always true and always happening….)
  • She said, “It is raining now.”
  • She said that it is raining now.”
Something which is happening at the moment (NOW) - No change in the tense.

Now, elaborate your understanding of reported speech. Go to pair activity
