What is the large data set for AQA

carS

The AQA LDS contains data about registered vehicles in 3 regions in England. You will be looking at cars manufactured in 2002 and 2016, as well as their various emissions. The focus is therefore to find patterns in these locations, make conjectures, make comparisons, investigate further, present your results and explain your findings.

Info

Locations, Makes, Registration Dates, Year Manufactured & Car Type

The LDS contains data for 3 regions in England, 5 car makers, 2 very specific date ranges in exactly 2 years and only 1 car type. You need to have a rough idea of the geography of the locations, notice that only a few registration days are included and only 5 makes are considered.

fEATURES

The LDS features 14 fields: ◼ReferenceNumber ◼Make ◼PropulsionTypeId ◼BodyTypeId ◼GovRegion ◼KeeperTitleId ◼EngineSize ◼YearRegistered ◼Mass ◼CO2 ◼CO ◼NOX ◼part ◼hc

iN MORE DEPTH

ReferenceNumber

A reference number, given by AQA, to index the data

Make

Only 5 makes of car are included in the database

A code for the type of fuel used - see the Field Values sheet for more information

PropulsionTypeId

A code for the type of car. See the Field Values sheet for more information. Only cars of type M1, passenger vehicles with no more than 8 seats, are included

BodyTypeId

GovRegion

English region of the current registered keeper - derived from postcode data. Registered keeper lives in London, North West or South West

iN MORE DEPTH

A code to show the current registered keeper's gender derived from DVLA data giving the keeper's title

KeeperTitleId

EngineSize

Engine capacity in cubic cm

The year in which the vehicle was first registered. Date ranges 03.06.2002-09.06.2002 and 06.06.2006-12.06.2006. Notice that there are only two years included

YearRegistered

Mass

Mass of vehicle in kg, including the mass (75kg) of the average driver

CO2

Carbon dioxide emissions from the vehicle in g/km. Known for 83% of cars in the whole database

iN MORE DEPTH

Carbon monoxide emissions g/km Known for 82% of cars in the whole database

CO

Oxides of nitrogen emissions g/km Known for 81% of cars in the whole database

NOX

Particulate emissions g/km Only for diesel vehicles; 24% of all cars in the whole database

Part

Particulate emissions g/km Only for diesel vehicles; 24% of all cars in the whole database

Go to the google classroom, and download the excel file, containing the large data set. Now that you have an idea of the fields that are included in your data set, ask yourself the following questions? Can you think of more? Share your thoughts with your classmates.

1. How many cars are included in the LDS? 2. What makes of car are included and why? 3. How many electric powered cars are there? 4. How many cars have owners in the North West region? 5. How many cars have female registered keepers? 6. How many are company cars? 7. What is the largest engine size? 8. How many cars were registered in 2012? 9. What makes are the cars with the lowest carbon dioxide emissions? 10. What is the highest level of carbon monoxide emissions? 11. How many vehicles have nitrogen oxide emissions less than 0.01 g/km? 12. What is the highest level of particulate emissions? 13. What is the actual mass of the car with the largest mass? 14. What make is the car with the highest hydrocarbon emissions? 15. Jamie drives a BMW to work and home each day. Each journey is approximately 40 miles. Estimate the total CO2 emissions from Jamie’s car per annum by finding the average CO2 emissions for all BMWs in the LDS.

1. How many vehicles are included in the LDS? 3827 2. What makes of vehicles are included and why? BMW, Ford, Toyota, Vauxhall, Volkswagen, because they are the five makes most frequently registered. 3. How many electric powered cars are there? 1 4. How many cars have owners in the North West region? 1164 5. How many cars have female registered keepers? 878 (but we don’t know how many of the Unknown category (code 4) are female) 6. How many are company cars? 1351 7. What is the largest engine size? 4951 cc 8. How many cars were registered in 2012? We cannot find this out from the LDS, because it only has data for cars registered in one week in 2002 and one week in 2016 9. What makes are the cars with the lowest carbon dioxide emissions? The electric BMW and some other BMWs. The Volkswagen with zero CO2 emissions is likely to be an error, because it has a petrol engine. 10. What is the highest level of carbon monoxide emissions? 1.249 g/km 11. How many vehicles have nitrogen oxide emissions less than 0.01 g/km? 225 12. What is the highest level of particulate emissions? 1.495 g/km © AQA 2020 and its licensors. All rights reserved. v1.0 7 of 7

13. What is the actual mass of the car with the largest mass? 2450 – 75 = 2375 kg (The mass recorded in the LDS includes the mass of an average driver, 75 kg) 14. What make is the car with the highest hydrocarbon emissions? BMW 15. Jamie drives a BMV to work and home each day. Each journey is approximately 40 miles. Estimate the total CO2 emissions from Jamie’s car per annum by finding the average CO2 emissions for all BMWs in the LDS Some assumptions are necessary. This is an example of a sensible answer. Assume Jamie works 5 days a week for 45 weeks Number of journeys = 2 x 5 x 45 = 450 Distance travelled = 450 x 40 miles = 18 000 miles = 29 000 km Mean CO2 emissions for BMWs = 145 g/km Total emissions = 145 x 29000 = 4 205 000 grams = 4.2 tonnes

Well done!
