Nowadays being different is something that can be very badly perceived in our society. The difference is a difficult subject to define. The difference is everywhere: in someone, somewhere, on an object... Sometimes the difference on the contrary is well seen, someone different can be a more attractive person to whom we want to talk. But in reality what makes us different people? difference: /ˈdɪf(ə)r(ə)ns/ noun : a point or way in which people or things are dissimilar. In this Topic we are going to talk about differences, and how the difference is seen in our society ? For that we are going to see diverse documents, and talk about how in their way they are linked to the ‘’ difference’’. For this we are going to see differences in: a book, a photograph, a song, a movie and a character.

INTRODUCTION

The incident of the dog in the nighttime Diane Airbus Creep Beauty and the Beast Jack, the nightmare before christmas

The Author Mark Haddon is a British novelist, poet, playwright and illustrator. He was born on 28 october of 1962 in Northampton. He first studied in Oxford, and then he went to Edinburgh University to study English literature. His first book was Gilbert's Gobstopper, a book for children, that he also has illustrated. His most famous book is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, written in 2003, he won several prizes with this book. The Topic This book takes place in Swindon in England. It’s the story of a 15 years old boy named Christopher, who write his first book which is a murder mystery novel. He investigates the murder of his neighbor's dog. He’s going to search and to ask everyone if they know something about it. Christopher lives with his father, his mother died 2 years ago, but a plot twist is going to happen.

The incident of the dog in the night-time

Christopher: Like we already said Christopher is 15 years old, he also has Asperger syndrome. In life he knows what he likes and what he doesn't, he can’t lie so he always tells the truth. He’s very good at mathematics ( that’s why the chapters are prime numbers ), and he doesn't like brown and yellow. He prefers animals to humans because they are easier to understand. His dream is to be an astronaut, but he’s not sure that it’s possible because he’s going to be in a little space, and he’s going to feel overwhelmed. He’s extremely focus on specific topic of interest, like cars for example, when he sees in the morning 4 yellows cars he’s going to have a BLACK DAY, but if he sees red car he’s going to have a good day. Differences: With his Asperger Syndrome he feels very different. Sometimes people have a bad reaction to him. Christopher has big difficulties understanding emotions, he only understands when people are sad or happy, so communication is difficult for him. Also he does not feel comfortable with others, he can quickly stop talking to a person, he only feels comfortable with a person he knows, so talk with strangers it’s impossible. Celebrities with Asperger Syndrome Marie Curie Einstein, Steve Jobs, Mozart, Newton, Tim Burton, Bill Gates, Temple Grandin, Michelangelo

The incident of the dog in the night-time

I really liked this book, and I think it talks a lot about differences. The narrator is Christopher so we can see the difficulties he has every day and we have another point of view. Normally in books when there is an autistic person, is always the best friend of the main character, but here in this book it changes ( and I think is very good), He’s also a very endearing character. Also I searched some things about autism, and I found that there are some supermarkets where once a week there is a day with a special hour where there is no noise, they put no songs or ads, for people who are ultra sensitive to sounds ( like Christopher). And I think it is good that society is evolving and helping people for whom it may be hard.

My Opinion

The incident of the dog in the night-time

Diane Arbus is an American photographer, born in 1923 and died 1971. Her style is special, she always photographs people who are different, like children, strippers, nudists… She said that ' ‘She was fascinated by people who were visibly creating their own identities’’. She inspired shining ( with her photograph of the twins), and other artists. Here is her most famous Photographs

Diane Arbus

So in this photograph we can see to the left 2 men putting on makeup, they wear bras and pantyhose, they are dressed all in black and they are young. At the left we see two old women with the same haircut, they are both wearing white pants a white top and a white bag. The women look at the men with attention and we don’t know what they think of them, but it looks like they don't like how they dress. Here we see a big difference between the two generations, there is like a wall between them. Time is well represented here, we see how we change with time, and it shows different steps of life that everyone is going to have. We can suppose that the women think that the young people are strange and they have bad taste, but we can also think that surely their parents said the same when the women were young.

Diane Arbus

Diane Arbus

I love the work of Diane Arbus. She really shows a lot of different people, she don’t care about how old they are, where they live, their style, their face… She just want to show to the world the people who are different from the society, to show the truth. Thanks to her it shows other things than magazine where everyone look like each other and they are all perfect.

My Opinion

Creep is a song written by Radiohead in 1992. Radiohead is a british rock band formed in 1985, there is Thom Yorke, brothers Jonny Greenwood and Colin Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Philip Selway. Their first song was Creep who immediately had success. They released a total of 9 albums, 6 of these albums reached number one in the UK

Creep

But I'm a creep I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doin' here? I don't belong here I don't care if it hurts I wanna have control I want a perfect body I want a perfect soul I want you to notice When I'm not around So fuckin' special I wish I was special

When you were here before Couldn't look you in the eye You're just like an angel Your skin makes me cry You float like a feather In a beautiful world I wish I was special You're so fuckin' special

This song is about a boy, who love a girl who is special, and he thinks that he’s not good for her, that he’s so strange. He feels different and he’s insecure. He says that he wants to be‘’perfect’’, and special. Here it show’s how with ourselves we can feel different, sometimes we don’t recognize, or we can be very insecure about our body. And it’s show also the comparison that we always made with the other, because we feel different from them.

Creep

Creep

And I think that it’s beautiful because the two of us complete each other without the other we are nothing and that’s special I wish I had met you before because now that I know you I want you for the rest of my life You’re so fuckin’ special I don’t care if you’re not special because I am not either What the hell are you talking about? Our love is so fuckin’ special and even the devil is jealous x2 please come with me I want you to leave this world with me we will build a new one where our love will be eternal we will belong to this world this world that we will call home…

It was a rainy day you were on this bench drinking a hot coffee at first I didn’t think that you were special but that didn’t matter because I fell in love we talked during hours about strange subjects we laughed so many times that I cannot remember why but that didn’t matter because we were on the same wavelength I don’t care if you are not special and I am not either What the hell do we care about this? Our love is so fucking special and even the devil is jealous

In class we hat to write a response or a personal version of creep and there is my work :

The beauty and the beast, it’s the story of a Belle, a young french girl who come from a poor family. One day her father is imprisoned in a castle, she decides to take his place, and she finds herself living in a large castle with a beast, but she doesn't know that he is a prince who received a curse.

Beauty and the Beast

This story want to show use the physical difference. At First Belle is scared by the beast, but more she talks with him more she likes him. She’s going to learn things about him and they will get along very well. She is going to fell in love with him and he will tell her that he’s in reality a prince. At the end he becomes a human. It shows that the inner beauty is more important, and maybe if you are different at the exterior the interior is not going to change. And we don’t have to judge a book by his cover. (even the objects are human in the movie) Personally I really like this movie that shows a beautiful moral to children compared to other fairy tale that promote beauty. Here shows us that sometimes the physical difference is not a choice and that it does not change anything in our personality.

Beauty and the Beast

The story

The nightmare before christmas is the story of Jack who lives in halloween town (which is the only theme of the town), who one day discovers in the forest several trees with different logos and doors on them. These doors actually represent different times of the year like Christmas, Easter, St Patrick…. He then decides to go to the Christmas town He will discover this new world with this new tradition and will want to celebrate it too with his friends.

The screenwriter and artistic director

Jack, The nightmare before Christmas

Tim Burton is an american director, screenwriter and producer. He is very famous in the American film industry, His most famous movies are, beetlejuice, Alice in Wonderland Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Batman… And today we are going to study the nightmare before christmas where he was the screenwriter and the artistic director

My Opinion

I really like this film and specially the character of Jack, first of all for the style because I think it changes, and it's quite rare to see children's stories with nice skeletons and monsters. I also find that it encourages you to be curious and even if something is completely different from what you are used to seeing, it is not an excuse to discover new things. We are shown that difference is not a barrier

In this story we can observe different types of difference. First of all the physical difference. Jack will find himself in a human world when he is a skeleton. He will feel that he is not normal and that people are afraid of him. Also he wears very sober colors, compared to the world of Christmas which is very colorful. There is also a social difference, the two worlds are opposites, in the Christmas world everything is perfect people don't do stupid things, while in the Halloween world there is a mad scientist who can cut off those arms. patients. But we see that Jack doesn't care about these differences, he hardly sees them, he just wants to change a little and know new things

Jack, The nightmare before Christmas

To sum up all make us different people, our voice, height, personality, hair, taste… And we all are different and that’s great. If we all looked like each other it will be very strange. The fact that we all are different is great because you can know different people, and be curious. Unfortunately in our society there is ‘’different’’ and ‘’different’’. For example people with disabilities may be judged, people ignore them and are not kind to them, But perfect people who likes a different thing is someone great ‘’original’’ and a lot of qualities. This is what we need to change, we should all be equal with the adjective ‘’ different’’.

CONCLUSION

We all grew up with imaginary worlds. Whether it's the stories out parents told us when we were little, whether it's the books we read or the movies we watched. Now even if we realize it less in everyday life we are confronted with imaginary worlds. Today this is what we are going to see, how do imaginary worlds have an impact on our lives? For this we will see fairy tales, gothic and dystopias

INTRODUCTION

Tinderella Dismaland Alice in Wonderland Tim Burton Interstellar

Tinderella is a humoristic video, who mix tinder and cinderella. In the video we see Cinderella looking for ''love'' on Tinder, she meets her prince charming, they organise a date in the evening in a bar. After their date they end up having sex, and they don’t end up together like in the original tale, but they are happy. The purpose of video is to denounce mock fairy tales, nowadays find love as in fairy tale stories has become impossible. Never a person on a horse will come and approach you on the street, save you from a fall and fall in love with you. Nowadays, most meetings are held via the Internet, for example via a dating application like Tinder. I found this short video very funny, it shows the reality (although obviously not all encounters happen like this), and showed the contrast between the love in fairy tales and reality. .

Dismaland

Dismaland: Dismaland is an amusement park whose creator is Banksy. Dismaland is a parody of Disneyland. In this park there are various attractions, with not pleasant employees at all. The purpose of the park is to be constantly in a bad slump. In the first photograph we can see Cinderella who just had an accident, and around her there are plenty of paparazzis. Banksy wanted to denounce the obsession with the photographs and celebrities, his work also refers to the death of Princess Diana, who died in a car accident. In the second photograph we can see a bird filling with oil that is about to die. The goal of the game is normally to catch the ducks, but now in reality free birds are increasingly affected by the damage of humans, and a lot of animals die because of pollution. Finally on the third picture we see a man sitting on boxes where there is written 'lasagna', he is on a carousel where there are horses, and lasagna is made after horses, in the background of the photo we can see a dead horse ready to be transformed into meat .

Dismaland

In clas we had to take a picture of a princess nowadays, and with a friend we did this work:For this work we wanted to represent Alice, from the fairy tale “Alice in Wonderland”, that was written by Lewis Carrol in 1865. The story is about a girl named Alice that was sitting by the river. She was pretty bored when suddenly a white rabbit appeared in a hurry to return to its burrow. Alice does not hesitate to follow him, and she falls into the rabbit’s hole, after that, she enters a world of fantastic creatures. "Alice in Wonderland" is for many people a simple tale for children, which is intended to show the child’s struggle to survive in the world of adults. But others see it as a campaign in favor of illicit substances. And that’s what we wanted to represent: how Alice would look nowadays. .

Alice in Wonderland

We can see that in the middle of the picture there is Alice. She is holding a cigarette with an empty and sad expression, and she looks exhausted. She is in a bar with lots of all sorts of alcohol, so we can assume that she has been drinking, and because of that, she’s having hallucinations (that we can see in the movie). We can also see on the table an ashtray with lots of already smoked cigarettes, but also lighters and a whole pack of cigarettes, and thanks to that we know that she’s addicted to it. We can see on the table a music disk with cocaine dashes on it, meaning that she has also been doing illegal and dangerous drugs( probably giving her hallucinations too). And finally, she has lots of tattoos on her hands and the corner of her right eye.She is addicted to all types of illicit substances and that’s why she’s exhausted. Her make-up is starting to run down her face. She has no time to think about anything (she only thinks about how drugs make her feel better, or that’s what she thinks), so she doesn’t take care of herself. She can’t sleep anymore, and she can’t have dreams anymore (the only dreams she has are all the hallucinations that she’s going through) The message that we want to send with this picture is the danger of the use of drugs. Because it could easily ruin someone’s life without them knowing. And that nowadays the modern Alice who has hallucinations, it’s not magical like we used to think as kids, we can’t romanticize hallucinations, because there are no sign of good health and are not normal, To sum up, our intention is to raise awareness of the drug use, but also the drug use in young adults. .

His Style: Tim Burton has created a cinematographic style that is his own, one can quickly recognize a film that was directed or co-directed by him. His style is usually Gothic, he always put monsters in every movie, because he think it is interesting, and the monsters he stages are very rarely evil. We can find in Jack the nightmare before christmas, Jack the main personage that is a skeleton, in Dark Shadows the main character is a vampire, in Beetlejuice, we can consider Beetlejuice as dead, and in Miss Peregrine’s Home for peculiar children there are also monsters. Tim Burton manages to mix Gothic, fantasy, humor which makes a mixture that the public greatly appreciates. Tim Burton is one of my favorite movie director. Since Childhood, I watch movies that he directed or co-directed, one might think that as he has a gothic style it doesn't appeal to children, whereas on the contrary he manages to make love his style and to make this gothic world wonderful. His style is totally in the theme Imaginary Worlds because he succeeded in creating his own imaginary world with the Gothic style base .

INTERSTELLAR

The Story: The story takes place in the future in a dystopian world. The world is starving, the world has almost no resources and the end of the world is coming. Cooper a former pilot for NASA will leave on a mission to find a new habitable planet, on the other side of a black hole.Cooper is the father of two children, including Murphy his 10-year-old daughter, they are both very close and she will bear his departure very badly, she will read in Morse 'S.T.A.Y' with books, she is going to say to her dad that a ghost made it. The biggest problem is that where Cooper goes time is different and spend less fast, in one of the planet where he will go 1 second for him will be worth 1 day on Earth. He will go on a mission with 3 other people. The mission will be harder than expected and everything will not happen as planned My Feelings: I love this movie, I saw it in class for the first time, then I reviewed in my house after, and I understood more things. It is a film full of details, all of which has been ministically thought out. Watching this film I went through full of emotions: joy, sadness, hope, compassion... The film is also very beautiful to watch, it is a huge cinematic work, the colors are very pretty, the actors play very well. One of the things I liked the most was the main music of the movie. The music appears several times in the film, at different moments, and the most incredible thing is that it appears at sad moments as at happy moments, and each time even if it remains the same melody we feel different emotions. This music makes me travel, when I listen to it and close my eyes I feel like I’m in an imaginary world Conclusion: For me this movie is completely in the theme « Imaginary Worlds “, it’s a dystopia and a science fiction movie, there is all a story behind the movie, where the story is very precise. It’s a movie who try to warn people by talking about the food crisis would soon arrive in the world and wants to show technological progress, while realizing that there is not always a solution .

INTERSTELLAR

To sum up, there is an infinity of imaginary worlds, in many different styles. Imaginary worlds allow us to dream and escape reality. But you should never think that an imaginary world is reality, because in the case of fairy tales the world is too perfect. In any case, we must continue to invent imaginary worlds and tell or write about them.
