The Yellowstone National Park is situated in the North-West of the United States. It's very big. In fact, it's larger than some USA states! Around 4 million people from all over the world visit the park each year. You can go camping, hiking and even mountain biking. Yellowstone became a national park in 1872. It's the oldest park in the USA. Yellowstone park is in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. The Yellowstone River runs through the park. Summers in Yellowstone are quite warm but they can be stormy, too. In the winter, it often snows. The coldest temperature even recorded at Yellowstone was minus 54 degrees Celsius. Many people visit Yellowstone to see the amazing geysers. A gayser is an underground spring that shoots jets of hot water and steam into the air. There are about 500 geysers in the park.

THE GRAND CANYON
And now, after these explanations, can you name the oldest nation park in the USA?
In the US there is also another very important national park. This is the Grand Canyon. It's in the state of Arizona. It's a deep, rocky valley. The Colorado river runs through it. The Grand Canyon is 29 kilometres at its widest point and 446 kilometres long. That's as long as 4250 football pitches! An did you know the Grand Canyon is nearly 2 kilometres deep? Summer temperatures can get as hot as 40 degrees Celsius. In the winter, there can be a lot of snow and the temperature can be as cold as -18 degrees Celsius. There tourists are on a boat trip through the canyon. The river is very fast and it can be dangerous.
The United States (U.S. or US), officially the United States of America (U.S.A. or USA) and commonly known as America, is a country located in North America.
It consists of 50 states and a federal district.
In the United States, a state is a constituent political entity (federated state) of the federal state (the USA).
The Federal District is Washington D.C. (District of Columbia), the capital of the USA.
50 states make up the United States, 48 of which are contiguous, while two of them, Alaska and Hawaii, do not share borders with any other state.
In the 48 contiguous states, i.e. from NYC to San Francisco, there are 4 time zones.
If we add Alaska and Hawaii, the time zones become 6.
The USA is an enormous country.
It's the 3rd biggest country in the world (after Russia and Canada).
It has the 3rd largest population in the world (after China and India).
It's about 4,830 km from the East to the West coast.
Its neightbours are Canada in the North and Mexico in the South.
As the second largest ocean basin, the Atlantic Ocean touches the East coast of the USA, while the Pacific, Earth's largest ocean basin, borders the US West coast.
STARS AND STRIPES
The national flag of the USA has 13 stripes and 50 white stars on blue background: STARS AND STRIPES. The 13 stripes refer to the 13 British colonies that declared independence from the kingdom of Great Britain in 1776 and the 50 stars refer to the 50 USA states.
