Information about Ireland

Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle. And yes, as you can imagine it is thanks to its beautiful and green landscapes. In 1922 it became independent from the United Kingdom and became a republic in 1949. The famous Celtic harp, a symbol of Ireland, appears on Irish euro coins.

In the beginning

st Patrick

Saint Patrick (384-461), archbishop and missionary from Scotland, came to Ireland to convert the inhabitants to Christianity. He was able to make important conversions in the royal families. Ireland became almost exclusively Christian and a center of learning and culture, but most of this legacy was destroyed during Viking raids in the 9th and 10th centuries.

Myths and Legends

1. Origin of Irish mythology

The oldest myth in Irish mythology belongs to the High Middle Ages of Ireland in manuscripts written by Christians, so it is to be expected that the nature and symbolism of the Celtic gods was reinterpreted. The myth from which the others originated seems to be that it was a war between two apparently divine races: the Tuatha Dé Danann, literally the Tribes of the Goddess Dana who constitute what is called the great gods of the Irish pantheon, and the Fomoré, a people of giants who live on the islands surrounding Ireland and who constantly threatened their invasion. Trees were also sacred to the early Celts. The importance that some of them had for them is reflected in some names, such as the Eburonian tribe, which refers to the yew tree, or mythological names such as Mac Cuilinn, 'son of the holly' or Mac Ibar 'son of the yew' .
