Ana-Isabel Martínez-Hernández Universitat Jaume I Castelló de la Plana (Spain)

Start

You're embarking on an adventure that consists of 5 missions to test your reading comprehension and critical understanding of the book. In each and every one of them you will be given a question that, if answered correctly, will give you a key to unlock the next mission and continue on your quest. AIM: Find out what happened to Snowball and end the dictatorship, manipulation and slavery. Record your game with GMeet.

Are you ready?

Chicken out

I was born ready

Tutorial

Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. No animal shall wear clothes. No animal shall sleep in a bed. No animal shall drink alcohol. No animal shall kill any other animal. All animals are equal.

The 7 commandments

Hover your mouse over the pink buttons to see what they do. Then click on "play" to get started.

INTRODUCTION

Napoleon and his henchmen keep instilling fear into the animals on the farm. The only leader that understood the problems and needs of the industrious animals, Snowball, has fled the farm - or so you have been told. This turned him into the most wanted animal: Napoleon put a price on his head - dead or alive. Squealer does nothing but do justice to his name spreading false rumours about Snowball and all the animals in the farm are scared without someone who would face Napoleon and defend the common interest. But not you! In fact, you are the black sheep of your family. You are the one who has not blindly followed the flock. While your brothers and sisters are bleating "Four legs, good. Two legs, bad", you murmur the 7 Commandments as you read them on the wall, just like Snowball taught you.

I can't believe Snowball has flown the coop.

He can't have been so selfish, can he?

Has he chickened out?

Nah, that's not possible, he's a pig, not a chicken, and pigs don't "pig out", that's not a thing.

Two leeeegs good, four leeeegs baaaad.

Two leeeegs good, four leeeegs baaaad.

Two leeeegs good, four leeeegs baaaad.

I'll find out what happened.

Two leeeegs good, four leeeegs baaaad.

Mission #1

How well do you know Snowball?

This mission consists of a question which, if answered correctly, will lead you to a key. This key will help you solve a puzzle to unlock the next mission.

Next

Mission #1

You think that Snowball can't have disappeared without any trace, so you decide to look for clues. Think of Snowball's character, passions and ideals: where do you think Snowball might have left hidden clues for you?

At the farm

At Mr Jones' manor house

At the windmill

Mission #1 - Sorry!

No way, José! He can't have gone in there since he fervently believed that everything related to humans was bad, so why would he leave something so important near the humans?

Return

Mission #1 - Sorry!

It hadn't been built yet when Snowball escaped. Napoleon had it built afterwards; even though it was Snowball's idea and it would have been a good hiding place for something of value.

Return

Mission #1 - Hurray!

Exactly! That would have been the most symbolic place for him, where the revolution began.

Here's is your key to decipher the clue which opens the next mission. Click on it and it will take you to a GSlides. (R out = A in)

More human than not

You see the lights in the living room are on and decide to come closer. You think something's fishy...

Next

Mission #2

You take a peep through the window and see two characters playing cards. Which real historical event are you witnessing?

The U.S.S.R. involvement in WWII

The Tehran Conference

An alliance between Hitler and Stalin

Mission #2 - Sorry!

The U.S.S.R's involvement in WWII is actually represented in the book with The Battle of the Windmill. To be more specific, it is the Battle of Stalingrad that is portrayed, when Stalin's troops defeat Hitlers' army, in the same way that Napoleon's "troops" defeat Frederick's.

Return

Mission #2 - Sorry!

Adolf Hitler forged an alliance with Stalin in 1939, although by 1941 they were fighting each other.

Mission #3

All work and no play

The animals on the farm are working hard, non-stop; especially Boxer. But you see something hiding in the bales of hay under the 7th Commandment "All animals are equal". You get closer.

Next

Mission #3

There are some things hiding in there. Which one do you pick?

Ribbons

Corn

Tools

Lumps of sugar

Mission #3 - Sorry!

I'm bitterly disappointed, comrade. I expected this from Mollie, but you? How could you? "Comrade, those ribbons that you are so devoted to are the badge of slavery. Can you not understand that liberty is worth more than ribbons?" (Orwell, 1945, p.9)

Return

Mission #3 - Sorry!

Last time I checked, you were a sheep, comrade; a sheep in the middle of a revolution. What do you want tools for? Work? Haven't you worked enough? Unless you want to resemble the pigs; or much worse: humans!Tools can be adapted for animals, like we did on this farm but what kind of a rebellion is this if you want to keep working for others, comrade?

Return

Mission #3 - Sorry!

What are these lumps of sugar doing here? Mollie must have misplaced them or she must be hiding them. She's always liked these human luxuries: ribbons and lumps of sugar.

"You do not need sugar, comrade. You have all the oats and hay you want." (Orwell, 1945, p.8) Sugar represents luxury. Correct me if I'm wrong, comrade, but last time I checked you were working class, not upper class.

Return

Mission #3 - Hurray!

That's it! Simply for sustenance. Here's the key to the next mission. Use it to unlock it.

"Snowball had found [...] an old green tablecloth of Mrs. Jones's and had painted on it a hoof and a horn in white. [...] The flag was green [...] to represent the green fields of England, while the hoof and horn signified the future Republic of the Animals which would arise when the human race had been finally overthrown." (Orwell, 1945, p.15-16) Here's the key to the final mission.

Final mission

Final Mission

What's it gonna be?

There are different possible endings to this story, tread carefully and choose wisely. You wouldn't want Napoleon to win, would you?

Next

Final Mission

Enough is enough. You need to overthrow Napoleon. You take from Pilkington's fireplace a piece of wood in flames. You are going to burn down:

the farm

the manor house

the windmill

the tools

NAPOLEON WINS

Alright, comrade. What the hell? Now all animals are furious. You just burnt to ashes their only shelter where they sleep, keep their food and raise their offspring. Have you gone mad? Napoleon wins. You need to flee Animal Farm as soon as possible, I'll take you under my wing. I can see now you were not ready yet.

Next

NAPOLEON WINS

Napoleon uses this to instill more fear, he plays the victim - he's been attacked and, by extension, this has been an attack on all animals. Squealer makes propaganda by saying that humans want to rid the world of all of you. Their union grows stronger against the common enemy. You need to flee Animal Farm as soon as possible, I'll take you under my wing. You were not ready for this.

Next

NAPOLEON WINS

I don't think you've thought this through. By burning the tools you don't free them; animals can still work with their hooves, horns and strength. You only made Napoleon angry and he's going to take it out on the rest of your comrades. They are going to hate you for this. You need to flee Animal Farm as soon as possible, I'll take you under my wing. You were not ready for this.

Next

CONGRATULATIONS!

I'm proud of you, comrade! You've won. I never doubted you for a second. I knew you'd find a way! You are the hero and the new leader. Although this is the third time your comrades build a windmill, which was my idea in the first place, it has shifted from symbolising progress and self-sufficiency to production, profit, corruption and lies. It's all over now. Or is it? There is still one hard decision to make.

Next

The 7 commandments

You go into the farm and see that the 7 Commandments have been vandalised.

Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. No animal shall wear clothes. No animal shall sleep in a bed. No animal shall drink alcohol. No animal shall kill any other animal. All animals are equal.

You clean it and the other animals join you.

, with sheets.

, to excess.

You leave it as is.

, without cause.

but some are more equal than others.

CONGRATULATIONS??

You might have won, but the animals on the farm haven't. Between you and Napoleon, you are probably the lesser of two evils, but a tyrant nonetheless. You are no better than him. Let's see how long it takes for power to corrupt you.

Next

CONGRATULATIONS!

You win, the animals win, the farm wins, everybody wins! You are an exemplary ruler and you won't let power corrupt you. You know what is important and have strong principles. The farm is lucky to have you.
