What is voice?

Voice

In grammar, voice is a way of classifying the relationship between the action of a sentence and the one (or ones) doing (or not doing) the action.

Active voice

The subject is the "doer" of the action. "Kevin paints flowers in his free time."

Passive voice

The subject receives the action. For example, "Flowers are painted by Kevin in his free time." Here, "Flowers" is the subject, but it's being acted upon (painted) rather than doing the acting.

WHEN TO USE

Case 3

Case 2

Case 1

To emphasize an action itself and the doer of the action is irrelevant or distracting:

Reports of crimes or incidents with unknown perpetrators

Scientific contexts

WHEN TO USE

Case 6

Case 5

Case 4

when the action is more important than the agent, as in processes, instructions, events, reports, headlines, new items, and advertisements.

when the agent (=the person who does the action) is unknown, unimportant or obvious from thecontext.

to make more polite or formal statements.

IDENTIFYING INFORMATION

01

NONIDENTIFYING INFORMATION

A by-phrase is not included (1) when it adds repetitive, unimportant, or unspecific information (someone, anyone) (2) when the speaker is avoiding mention of the agent. (e.g., Mistakes were made.)

A passive clause permits the focus to be placed on the known information. A by-phrase with the agent (source of the action) is included only when it adds identifying, important information.
