PRESENT SIMPLE AND PRESENT CONTINUOUS

POSITIVE

The present simple is used to talk about things that happen regularly. .. Present simple is not used to talk about something that is happening at the moment we are speaking. It is used for events scheduled in the near future and scientific facts. It is used for instructions (imperative).

PRESENT SIMPLE

EXAMPLES

NEGATIVE

I don't eat a tomato You don'teat a tomato He doesn't eat a tomato She doesn't eat a tomato It doesn't eat a tomato We don't eat a tomato They don't eat a tomato

QUESTION

EXAMPLE

They sometimes fight

He never studies

We are never worried

She is usually late

I am always happy

I always talk

The present simple is often used with adverbs of time. Adverbs of time go before the verb, except with the verb “ to be ” . When “ to be ” is used, the verb goes before the adverb.

EXCEPTIONS

But: A final y after a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) is not modified. Example: play - he plays.

A final y after a consonant becomes ie before s. Example: worry - he worries.

Verbs ending in o or a sibilant (ch, sh, s, x) add es instead of s. Example: do - he does, wash - she washes.

The verbs can, may, might, must remain the same in all forms. So don't add s. Example: he can, she may, it must.

The 3rd person singular is usually formed by adding s. But there are a few exceptions to the rule:
