Origins of jazz music

The origins of Jazz go back to the 1900th. Jazz became popular in New Orleans, being played by black people mainly. This style evolved from the songs played by African slaves in past centuries.

Changes in African music

African music was the main inspiration for jazz. Most of its elements are found in some way in the popular music genre of the 20s.Musical elements from African music can also be seen in modern songs or compositions, one example being the album Sun, by Thomas Bergersen.

What are the jazz elements derived from its historical background?

Jazz conserves a lot of elements from its past. A very distinct element is the rhythm. Jazz retents rythms patterns that were traditionally from African cultures, such as the use of tresillos and syncopated rhythmic structures.

Jazz also exerts influence over other music styles, such as hip-hop and rock. And it developed into other combinations of music styles, some of them being afro-cuban jazz or jazz-rock.
