Emotions are a complex set of feelings that can be positive or negative. Throughout history, artists have tried to express emotions and represent them in their works.
How did art and art movements represent emotions?
Hamlet "To be or not to be", Shakespeare.
- Presentation :
The famous soliloquy "To be or not to be" is taken from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet and is delivered by Prince Hamlet in Act 3, Scene 1. The first line raises the primary question of the discourse: 'To be, or not to be', that is. 'To live, or to die'.It is important to notice that
Hamlet asks this question to the whole of humanity rather than to himself. This monologue questions the point of human existence. According to Hamlet, it is questionable if life is worth living. It is when he is confronted with treason, death... that he wonders if life is worth so much suffering. Hamlet's only purpose in life is to revenge his father by killing, instead of trying to rebuild himself, his purpose will be to cause destruction. With death as a guide throughout his existence and history, it is not surprising that he says "to be or not to be? That is the question'. All the questions, doubts, troubles that Hamlet has, and
ndividual to emancipate himself. Therefore, Hamlet is thinking about life and death. It is the major question that Hamlet is asking about human existence in generally and his own existence in particularly a reflection on if it' s better to be alive or to be dead.
hat he expresses in his monologue, are similar to the audience's own anxieties and doubts. This is why it is easy to empathize with Hamlet and try to answer his existential question.
- Interpretation :
This can be understood as an invitation to introspection. It leads us both to a better knowledge of ourselves and to a better understanding of the world around us. Through this work, the spectator can be led to construct himself. Indeed, questioning the meaning of one's existence as Shakespeare does, or even trying to find it, automatically has an impact on one's life, and an impact on one's vision of the world. Hamlet's speech, which makes one aware of the possibility of existing as an individual, has transgressive virtues. Among other things, the expression of his doubts and feelings allows the

partners, as they were seen as capricious creatures. It is therefore understandable that in order to get messages across, there is nothing better than to express one' s emotions. This is what Martin Luther King did very well in his speech on 28 August 1963.

- Presentation :
Feelings and emotions can be described in all their excess. Being mad was long seen as inappropriate, expressing anger in public or private settings was totally improper. Experiencing and expressing strong emotions made them less likely to be
The art of oratory plays a lot on the expression of the emotions of the speaker and the listener at its reception. This can be seen as we have seen in some of the great monologues of Shakespeare's theatre such as Hamlet, or in political speeches such as Martin Luther King's "I have a dream". The existential dimension of emotional expression is central.
- Interpretation :
In his speech 'I have a dream', Martin Luther King Jr. uses not only logic, but also express emotion. When Martin gave his speech, not many people were present to hear it in person. The speech of King was not extremely famous when he first gave it; it was only later that it became famous. If he used only logic or only emotions, people would listen to him but not support him for long periods of time. When he uses logic and emotion, people listen to him and understand that he means what he says and that he has some examples to back up what he is saying. In addition to logic and emotion, he uses images and repetition in his speech. Martin Luther King showed both logic and emotion in his speech by using images. The second paragraph of his speech includes four examples of how African Americans should live in America.
Photographs of Wayne Quilliam
- Presentation :
Wayne William is one of Australia's most prominent Indigenous photographic artists, curators and cultural advisors, working internationally. He has won numerous awards for his photography. He is an Australian photographer, but works around the world. He is often found in communities in different countries where he shares his knowledge and teaches young people the expression of culture through the lens. He has also written several books. This artist is not only interested in photography but also in conferences, developing shows, intercultural art and cultural exchanges with the aim of
creating worldwide exhibitions. We will focus here on his talent as a photographer. Wayne Quilliam wants his photography to open people's hearts and minds to Indigenous culture.
Song manThis photo represents the strength and knowledge of the Warlpiri people who welcomed us.
This picture shows the children running after school, looking happy and innocent.
This photo shows individuals near the community phone. The particularity of this one is that when it rings, the nearest person answers.
This photo shows the children of Galiwin'ku playing in the rain.
Wayne is not a famous artist. But his photographs are the ones I found most emotional. Indeed, sometimes photos are more powerful than words. They can touch your heart and soul when words speak to the mind. This is what this artist shows us through his photos. I found his photos to be so intense that one might associate them with something documentary. Everything is done so that the viewer feels immersed in the image. This is what I felt.

2.Staging the self
Triple Self-Portrait of Norman Rockwell
"Jane Eyre", Charlottte Brontê
Nelson Mandela – Long walk to freedom
Many artists have chosen to present themselves in their works, in an artistic process that goes beyond simple narcissistic presentation.
What ways do artists and authors use to present themselves?
Triple Self-Portrait, Norman Rockwell
- Presentation :
A person's personality is what describes him or her as an individual through specific psychological characteristics and traits. We will see how painters represent themselves through their personality. Painters and photographers have always liked to represent themselves as individuals or as artists. Their self-portraits are like reflections in a mirror, revealing elements of their life or personality. The main objective of the painter when he represents himself is to show how he sees himself as an artist, so he tries to transmit his conception of art.
Three representations of ROCKWELL are obvious at first sight. The title is therefore justified.
- Why did I choose it ?
- Interpretation :
I chose this work because I find it very interesting. It is not a familiar principle, the work repeats itself. Here it is a painter who paints himself.By painting himself by embellishing himself, he shows the tentation to give a more beautiful image of himself. It raises the problem of the sincerity of autobiography. Which can be a very important problem. This work also invites us to ask ourselves which of the three characters represented is the "real" one? The one with his back to us who is painting is no more real than the others, since he is also the work of Norman Rockwell.
Norman Rockwell, in his painting : Triple Self-Portrait, appears as an artist painting himself. He gives to the viewer direct access to his atelier. One has the impression of stumbling into his creative space to see the artist at work. Here, Rockwell's aim is rather to desacralise the artist, so that he appears relaxed, wearing ordinary clothes and smoking his pipe as we see him. There is also a lot of self-mockery in this self-portrait, perhaps the author's wish was to appear humble and not to take himself too seriously.
"Jane Eyre", Charlottte Brontê
- Présentation
Writers may decide to use themselves and their life experiences as the main inspiration for their books. They tell personal stories through fiction. Authors are known to have very eventful personal lives which are ideal material for writing novels or screenplays. Many have developed the habit and art of
personifying fictional versions of themselves in their
works. Charlotte wrote Jane Eyre in 1847. Considered widely as a classic, it gave a new truth to the Victorian novel. It realistically describes the domestic life of a woman, recording her struggles with her natural desires and her social condition. It became one of the most popular novels of its time, both critically and commercially.
- Interpretation :
There are some autobiographical elements throughout Jane Eyre. For example, Jane's experience at Lowood School, when her dearest friend dies, may refer to the deaths of Charlotte's sisters at Cowan Bridge. The hypocritical religious faith of the headmaster, Mr Brocklehurst, is partly based on that of the evangelical minister who ran Cowan Bridge. In order to get back at the school that treated her so badly, Charlotte used the fictional Lowood School as a base. Furthermore, John Reed's decline into alcoholism and dissolution is most likely inspired by the life of Charlotte Brontë's brother, who also sank into opium and alcohol. Finally, like Charlotte, Jane becomes a governess - a neutral point of view through which she can describe the oppressive ideas and social practices of nineteenth-century Victorian society. So even if it is not known as a biography, it can be one.
Nelson Mandela – Long walk to freedom
- Presentation :
Nelson Mandela was a prominent South African anti-apartheid activist and politician. As a young man, he became an active member of the African National Congress (ANC). Nelson Mandela took an oath in 1994 to be the first black president of South Africa. As a resulted, South Africa became a fledgling democratic country. Nelson Mandela is inaugurated as the first black president.
- Film history :
"A Long to Freedom", Nelson Mandela, published in 2013, is a film about the fight for freedom in South Africa. It is an adaptation of the autobiography based on his 1995 autobiographical book, which tells the story of his childhood, his political career, his struggles against apartheid and his years in prison. The film is a full reconstruction of Mandela's life. Mandela : Long Walk to Freedom is a carefully made, respectful, chronological account of what made Mandela who he was and the price he had to pay to become that. The film uses newsreel footage and period music. All the major events of his life are there: the Sharpville massacre, his hiding, his arrest as a terrorist, the Rivonia trial, his life imprisonment on Robben Island... Most of the dialogue is taken directly from the autobiography."The brave man is not the one who does not feel fear, but he is the one who conquers it. "According to Mandela, every man has a duty to his country and his community.
1.Art and protest
Banksy Rage the Flower Thrower
The Handmade's Tale By Margaret Atwood
The artist, through art, tries to denounce, to pass on messages... Art can also have a denouncing form and reveal to be a contestation of certain norms without the artist entering for all that in an explicit step of engagement.
How do artists use the arts to defend a point of view, to denounce it?
Banksy Rage the Flower Thrower
- Presentation:
Banksy is known for his unique and significant graffiti. Flower Thrower is probably one of his most famous works. This work is as much poetic as it is political. This work is effective and simple and powerful. It shows a Palestinian masked with half his face. Instead of a grenade, Banksy places a bouquet of flowers in the hand of the thrower.
- Interpretation :
The facial expression and posture of the man in the mural seem to indicate that there is a real violent intention. However, by replacing weapons with a bouquet, the author is advocating peace rather than violence.
The location speaks to the message behind this mural as it is placed on a wall in Bethlehem, where there is a strong military and armed presence. One can also associate this mural with the peaceful protests, but it can also be influenced by the violent conflicts in the Middle East. However, Banksy is a pacifist and anti-war, so many events may have influenced his work. The bouquet of the flower thrower symbolizes not only peace, but also love and life. This bouquet can be associated with the memory of the many lives lost in all religious conflicts. This work is a perfect example of Banksy's use of art to convey messages of social importance. "Rage, the Flower Thrower" is inspired by political and social situations to create his work. The artist uses these situations to spread his work and educate the public about what is happening in the world.
- Why did I choos it ?
I decided to chose this piece because i was immediatly drawn, to it. The way that, the artist reunits in the same piece two apposit emotions : violence and love. The man is, unindentified like, Banksy himself but also like young people in riots, that. want to heard. Like street artists.ripters, thex's hide but express them, selves loudly. Banksy's touch transforms, a violent gesture, in a pacfic, gesture, insted of throwing tear gaz he throws flowers. I appreciate, the way that, the artist expresses in a simple way, a cpmplex, and meaningful message.
The Handmade's Tale By Margaret Atwood
- Presentation :
Art always plays a major role in shaping people's minds and opinions on political or social issues. In reality, art and protest is not meant to change the world, but rather to change the perceptions. In fact, art can change the way we see the world, it impacts individuals on a personal level. It changes people's minds, it forces them to look, to think, to question, to agree or disagree, to simply develop their critical sense. This is the case of The Handmaid's Tale written by Margaret Atwood in 1985. The Handmaid's Tale is a book by Margaret Atwood describing a dystopian society where women are no longer citizens but servants who obey strict social rules.
In The Handmaid's Tale, the story takes place in New England under a fundamentalist Christian theocratic regime. All the elements are present: the deprivation of freedoms, abuses of all kinds and the fierce will to survive, to denounce, to resist.
- Why did I choose it ?
This book has marked me because it has been for a long time at the center of controversy. There have been several protests against patriarchy where young women have dressed up as characters from The Handmaid's Tale. We can see that art has the ability to give us symbols that will unite us in our struggle for our rights. Moreover, this dystopia does not stop at the question of the place of the woman, here represented by strong and enslaved characters, the series also poses the question of the religious extremism and the dictatorship. Between past and present, Offred makes us realize how lucky we are. We never think about the fights that have been fought for us but The Handmaid's Tale is one of those books that make us think.
