Mao Zedong was the former president of the People's Republic of China and a Chinese communist revolutionary. During his leadership in 1949, he encouraged couples to have more children, as this would help make the country seem more stronger and there would be more soldiers to provide for its army and workers for factories. This added 100 million more people to its population.
The Chinese famine
The Great Chinese Famine was a period between 1959 and 1961, which is widely regarded as the dedliest famine and one of the greates man-made disasters in human history. 15-55 million people died due to starvation. The major contributing factor was the Great Leap Forward, when the population increased rapidly , but there wasn't enough food sources and supplies. In 1958, Chairman Mao introduced the 'Smash Sparrow' campaign and told everyone to kill the sparrows because he felt that the sparrows ate too much grain, which decreased the food supply.
