the cocoa boom
- Since 1870, Ecuador has experienced an important and great economic growth due to the increase in the production and export of cocoa.
- At the end of the 19th century Ecuador began to sell a lot to the world and we were the first exporters in the world.
- Thanks to the cocoa in the last years of the 19th century, many commercial houses and banks were established in Guayaquil and they grew very fast.
- Ecuador got into the international market because in the world the cocoa was in demand and we had many plantations of cocoa in Guayas and Los Rios.
¿what happend with Cocoa boom all around the world?
- Ecuador export 75% of cocoa.
- Cocoa production in Ecuador is around 100,000 tons of cocoa per year.
- These tons come to be cultivated on approximately 300 thousand hectares of land, and they are also the source of employment for more than 100 thousand families.
- Ecuador was the largest exporter of cocoa from 1875 to 1925.
- The first cause of the cocoa boom was the second industrial revolution caused a demand for cocoa in the United States, Europe and Japan.
- England and some colonies in Africa began to produce their own cocoa in 1907.

Cocoa witch's broom is endemic to the tropical areas of South America, this plague can provocate the death of the plant, due to many cycles of the germ. This brought big losses in cocoa production around the world.
¿Why was it known as Boom Cacaotero?
Thanks to the cocoa, Ecuador since 1870 started to grow economically beacuse we were exporters and we been in the world market. We sold cocoa as raw material and the industrialized countries made chocolate.
