What is exercise and why is it important?

What is exercise?

Exercise is physical activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health, mental health and wellness.

Why is it important?

Physical activity can help people improve cardiorespiratory fitness, create strong bones and muscles, control peoples weight, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and other mental health issues, and reduce the risk of developing health conditions such as heart disease.

As mentioned in the past slide, sports and physical activity have many benfits and are practically solucions for many issues. Therefore, we are going to list physical activities and what they are helpful for:

So now we understand what exercise is and why its good for us, we need to learn why a lack of excercise is bad for our health, called being sedenatry.

What is being sedenatry and why should we avoid it

What is the definition of being sedenatry?

The meaning of sedenatry is doing or involving a lot of sitting: not doing or involving much physical activity. In other words, sitting down for long periods therefore leading the absence of physical activity.

Why should we avoid it?

being sedenatry can increase your chance of developing fatal blood clots that form in the veins of our legs, it slows our metabolism (which affects our blood sugar levels, our blood pressure, etc), all of these leading to cancer, type 2 diabetes and an early death.

Ways to avoid being sedenatry

How can we avoid being sedenatry?

These are some of the ways you and others can avoid being sedenatry.

  • avoid long periods sat in front of a TV or computer
  • stand up and move during TV advert breaks
  • stand or walk while on the phone
  • use the stairs as much as possible
  • take up active hobbies
  • do most types of housework
  • set a timer to move around every 30 minutes
  • set a screen time limit to avoid being sat down too long
