The peasants were farmers and had little money, buy they provide food to all China. The craftspeople made tools, weapons, furniture and household goods for the upper classes.
These government workers were highly respected because they served the royal family, could read and write, were trained according to the principles of official philosophy and could influence state decisions.
The emperor and the royal family possessed the most power and wealth, they were seen as superior to ordinary people and their orders were considered sacred decrees.

The farmers life was really hard, they were obliged to grow their own food and to labour for the landowner. They used animals like dogs and oxen to do the work but most of the work was done by hand. Farmers had to work for the government and also had to pay a tax by giving the government a percentage of their crops.
The traders and shopkeepers, they were looked down upon because they made their wealth from trading goods produced by others not by their own hand.
The Slaves are at the base of the pyramid, at the beginning slavery was public and part of the state and the first slaves were criminals and prisoners of war, however, it did not take long for it to become private and enter the family sphere, the slaves of the private part were people who were acquired by purchase or by other means. In addition slaves had little hope of advancement, although a lucky few did.
