Reported speech works changing verb tenses. If your sentence uses simple present, you report it in simple past... Piece of cake! Now, let's check what happens with past tenses... We go from simple past to past perfect or past continuous to past perfect continuous (wait, what? )
USING WAS/WERE
So... welcome! When your sentence uses verb to be in past (was/were) You change it to "had been"...
She said (that) the weather had been terrible the day before.
The weather was terrible yesterday.
He told me (that) the concerts had been cancelled because of the rain.
The concerts were cancelled because of the rain.

USING other verbs
Here we go! When your sentence uses regular (-ed) or irregular verbs you change it into had+past participle... (What? )
Cristhian told me (that) he had visited London last week
I visited London last week
They ate tuna sandwiches last night.
Susan said (that) he had eaten tuna sandwiches last night
Let's move on ...
USING was/were and -ing
Last round! When your sentence uses verb to be (was/were) and a verb in -ing form you change it into had been+ verb in ing ... (no way! )
She said (that) he had been playing LOL when his mother called.
He was playing LOL when his mother called.
He said (that) we had been dancing yesterday at 7:30pm.
We were dancing yesterday at 7:30pm
