In 1773 King George III put higher taxes on tea and the colonists were very angry. Theydid not want to pay another tax
The British sent their army and the colonists started organizing theirs. In April 1775 the American Revolution began with battles between British soldiers and American colonists, known as the Patriots.
In the summer of 1776 some important patriots wrote a document called the Declaration of Independence. This document said that the thirteen colonies were now indipendent American states. On 4 July 1776 the declaration was signed and the United States of America was born. However , the british did not accept this and the fight continued.
In 1778 France became an important ally of the United States and sent soldiers and ships to fight the British. Spain and the Netherlands also became American allies in 1779 - 1780.
On 16 December 1773 a group of colonists in Boston , Massachusset put on American Indian clothes and went onto three British ships. They threw 342 big boxes of tea into the sea. This famous event was called BOSTON TEA PARTY and it was the beginning of the fight for independence

In the battle of Yorktown, Virginia of 1781 the British army lost and the British General Cornwallis surrendered.

September 1783 America and Great Britan signed the peace treaty in Paris. The United States of America became an indipendent nation and grew quickly. The leader of Patriots' army was General George Washington. Later he became the first President of the United States. He is often called ''The Father of the Country ''.
