Sustainability & Environmental Stewardship

Doing our part for a healthy planet

We’re building the new St. Paul’s Hospital on the Jim Pattison Medical Campus to be more sustainable and high performance. Sustainable, earth-friendly health care is integral to the well-being of each of us, our communities and our planet. Sustainability is a foundational principle in Providence Health Care’s Mission: Forward Strategic Plan and guides our actions and decisions.

WATER AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Design strategies to minimize energy and water use

Water The hospital will have high-efficiency systems and strategies to reduce the use of water indoors and outdoors. Energy The mechanical and electrical systems will be energy efficient, reliable, and economical to minimize our environmental impact.

DYK? Our LEED certified hospital will also exceed the energy performance required by the City of Vancouver's Green Building Policy for Rezonings.

WELLNESS WALK

Spaces for movement, exercise, and rest

Linking the entire campus to our community, the Wellness Walk is a pedestrian and bike-friendly pathway circling the hospital. Woven through the 800m path will be references to the rich cultural history and historic shorelines of the site.

GREEN SPACES

Environments to promote holistic healing

Landscapes at the new hospital are designed to provide healing — for patients, visitors, staff and our environment. Therapeutic green spaces will help foster health and wellness, and the landscaping is designed to be resilient to a changing environment, from rising water levels to severe weather. A Knowledge Keeper and ethnobotanist from Squamish Nation will inform plants chosen to honour the Host Nations and the Indigenous patients who use the hospital

Menu

SPIRITUAL SUPPORT

Spaces for respite for all faiths

The new hospital reflects and honours the faith-based mission of St. Paul’s Hospital and its tradition of compassionate care and social justice. The hospital provides safe and inclusive environments for all patients, visitors, and staff.
