Section I

5.1 Structure and Function

  • identify the major structures of the nervous system
  • relate the structure of the nervous system to its functions

Vocabulary

autonomic nervous system, axon, brain, central nervous system, dendrite, myelin, nerve, neuron, peripheral nervous system, spinal cord, voluntary nervous system

What type of tissue is found in the brain and spinal cord?

A - boneB - nervous C - cartilage D - muscle

Stretch Reflex

Schwann Cell & Myelin Sheath

A schwann cell envelops and rotates around the axon forming myelin sheath, now axon is myelinated.

5.2 The Brain

  • identify the major structures of the brain
  • explain how the brain functions as the body's control center

Vocabulary

Peripheral Nervous System

  • Somatic Division - skeletal muscles & voluntary movement
  • Autonomic Division - internal organs & involuntary processes
* Sympathetic - fight or flight* Parasympathetic - rest & digest

Spinal Cord

12 pairs of cranial nerves run directly from the brain to areas of the head, neck, and face. The remaining 31 pairs of spinal nerves branch off from the spinal cord. The names of the nerves correspond with the names of the associated vertebrae: Cervical nerves: C1–C8 Thoracic nerves: T1–T12 Lumbar nerves: L1–L5 Sacral nerves: S1–S4

Sensory Receptors

Sensory nerves are sensory receptors that receive information about the environment and send that information to the CNS via the sensory neurons. Your skin contains cutaneous sensory receptors that gather information about pain, temperature, touch, and pressure. Skeletal muscles and tendons contain proprioreceptors that detect tension in the muscles, tendons, and joints.

Reflex Arc

A reflex is a rapid, predictable, and involuntary response to a stimulus. A reflex is a preprogrammed response to a particular stimulus that occurs over a neural pathway called a reflex arc

Nervous System

Video

Autonomic Nervous System

This video explains how your sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system work together and balance each other out. Their key anatomical differences - where nerve fibers originate and where their ganglia are located - drive their distinct anatomical functions, making your sympathetic nervous system the "fight or flight" while your parasympathetic nervous system is for "resting and digesting." **Don't forget to answer the Exit TIcket questions**
