2.2 the Elizabethan worldview

- describes world view of the English society while Elizabeth I. reigned

- everything was a microcosm in itself and reflected the order of the cosmos

microcosm (Greek: for small, cosmos for world order) is the world of tiny compared to macrocosm (gigantic). Between those two is the area which can be perceived directly by the human. (area is called mesocosm)

- clear view of functioning of God's creation and man's position within this creation

- firm belief in a well-structured system of order and hierarchy

- regions, where Nature's order was constantly disturbed owned by chaos

- occasional disturbances were inevitable

- consequences: war among elements or animals defying nature
