Ditto tells you that waves are the key to figuring out how to communictate with his ship. So, you go check out the PhET wave simulations...the perfect place to get started.

Fantastic work! You know waves carry energy and can have different frequencies and amplitudes.
But, clearly a water wave will not be useful in communicating with Ditto's ship in space. Most of space is empty, without any kind of medium (particles such as air or water). Ditto needs a wave that does not require a medium to travel through!
What kind of wave does NOT require a medium (particles) to travel through?
electromagnetic waves
mechanical waves
Your
Your response was not correct.
Mechanical waves, such as sound, cannot travel through empty space.
Electromagnetic waves, such as sunlight, can travel through both empty space and a medium.
What kind of wave does NOT require a medium (particles) to travel through?
electromagnetic waves
mechanical waves
That's right! Unlike mechanical waves, electromagnetic waves can travel through empty space! Here's a quick interactive video to give you an introdution into electromagnetic waves.

As you continue researching electromagnetic waves, Ditto pops in to let you know that his spaceship has a radio wave receiver.
My spaceship has a big antenna that can receive radio waves.
Click on the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that represents radio waves.
You find an observatory that agrees to let you use their radio transmitters. The radio transmitters can produce radio waves that can be sent out into space.
Click on one of the radio transmitters.

You must program the radio transmitter to transmit a signal that will get the aliens' attention. Ditto suggests that you send out the signal for his name in binary code.
But what is binary code?

Let's use the letter A as an example. The letter A in binary code is:
01000001
For the letter A, there are 6 zeros and 2 ones. This gives a total of 8 zeros and ones. Each letter can be represented with a combination of 8 zeros and ones.

. Digital signals are
transmitted as short pulses that
represent different digits. Because these signals can contain only certain values, like 1s and 0s, they
can easily be corrected to remove static. Satellite TV, satellite radio, WiFi, and cell phones all rely on
digital signal transmission.
Ditto returns and you tell him that you have determined that electromagnetic waves could be used to communicate with his space ship. He tells you he thinks his ship can detect radar waves. But, how can we send a message using radar waves? Ditto tells you that like humans, they use binary code to communicate information. You can send wave pulses to spell out Ditto's name with the hopes that they decode it. The student programs the radio waves to send out the signal.

Binary code is a coding system that uses the digits 0 and 1 to represent a letter, digit, or other character in a computer or other electronic device.
This data table shows the binary code for each letter of the alphabet. For example, the binary code for the letter N is 01001110.

You have successfully transmitted the binary signal in the form of a radio wave. The radio tranmitters will keep sending out radio pulses in the pattern that you programmed.Hopefully Ditto's friends will recognize the signal and be able to use it to find him.

. Digital signals are transmitted as short pulses that represent different digits. Because these signals can contain only certain values, like 1s and 0s, they can easily be corrected to remove static. Satellite TV, satellite radio, WiFi, and cell phones all rely on digital signal transmission.
