What are printed materials?

Print media are portable publications printed on paper and circulated as physical copies in forms we call books, newspapers, magazines and newsletters. (Small Bussiness, 2012)

Reasons to use printed materials

  • Teachers and students often prefer print.
  • Print is more affordable.
  • School districts may lack the internet bandwidth to keep students online.
  • Educators are pursuing a hybrid approach that uses electronic and printed content.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PRINTED MATERIALS

  • Print media is tangible.
  • It allows educators to have direct interaction with students.
  • Allow students to highlight important parts in the text.
  • Direct instructional educators keep using printed materials:
  1. books

  3. workbooks

Benefits of Printed materials

They are easy to transport.

They are accessible.

It is the most transparent medium.

They present information in a selective way.

They allow re-reading, selective reading and a deeper understanding of what is being read.

It eliminates or reduces the obstacles of geographical, labor, family or any other problem that may arise.

Great variety of articles.

High quality photographs and illustrations.

High quality news and reports.

Different use of eye-pleasing color.

Printed teaching materials or media are the most widely used resources in the school system. In many cases they are exclusive media, in many classrooms, they are predominant and in others, they are complementary to audiovisual or computer media.

Characteristics of multimedia resources

  • Helps both teachers and students to have a broad view of the world regardless of time and distance.
  • Helps to learn the language in a more entertaining and accurate way (explanation by an insider).
  • Create environments similar to that of native speakers of the language.
  • Helps deliver lessons more targeted to learning objectives.

Can adapt to individual learning styles according to student needs

Increases memorization, language development skills, and understanding of complex topics.

Helps teachers to be more creative and use a wide variety of innovative learning techniques.

Increases interest level due to variety of learning options.
